Student Access to the Library
The South School Library Media Center is open to all learners during the school day. Students in grades 1 and 2 visit the library weekly during a scheduled time for a read aloud and book checkout. Learners in Grade 3 have weekly lessons on how to access and use the online catalog to find good fit books as well as fostering independence in the library. Grades 4 and 5 work with the librarian on research, literacy, and technology skills along with their weekly book exchange.
Students may check out as many books as they can be responsible for. The Library Media Center supports the district’s goal of helping students develop responsible and organized work habits. If a student consistently does not return library materials, reasonable limitations appropriate to the situation may be taken to help the student become responsible while still having access to library resources.
Students with materials missing, lost, or damaged at the end of the school year will be billed for replacement unless the material is returned in acceptable condition. The Library Media Center may send notices home during the course of the school year for materials that have been overdue for an extended time.
