Homework Policy
Homework will be given Monday through Thursday as reinforcement to daily lessons. The majority of their homework will consist of math and language arts. The weekends are time for students to catch up on the classroom assignments, or to work on finishing class projects.
Your child will be writing homework assignments down on a daily basis in their homework assignment books. These books should be checked and signed Monday through Friday. Homework should not take more than one hour of sustained attention.
Reading: In class, we use novels and reading passages to develop and practice comprehension skills, reading strategies, and vocabulary. Students will be expected to work in small and large groups, as well as independently. For homework, the students will be required to read an independent novel each week or log onto the iReady Program. Reading homework will be assigned weekly. Students will also be given a weekly reading comprehension assignment to be due on Fridays.
Writing: The students will be using the 6+1 Writing Program. The 6-Traits are: word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, idea development, organization, voice, and presentation. Please be aware that the student's writing pieces may not come home until they are finalized.
Math: The students will be using Math In Focus. Please study the math facts with your child as often as possible, or have them log onto the iReady Program. Homework will be assigned nightly on Monday-Thursdays to reinforce the lesson of the day. The students will begin the year learning about place value.
