“Walkers are practitioners of the city, for the city is made to be walked." -Rebecca Solnit

The well-known hiking advocate John Muir once asked, "do you know the origin of the word 'saunter?' He explained, "it's a beautiful word. Way back in the middle ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going and they would reply, 'a la sainte terre, 'to the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers."

It is my goal, as I saunter along every street in the city of York to find the beauty that surrounds us all and to play a small part in reclaiming the majesty of our beautiful city.

Follow my progress here as I walk every street in my hometown of York, PA.

“Walking, ideally, is a state in which the mind, the body, and the world are aligned, as though they were three characters finally in conversation together, three notes suddenly making a chord. Walking allows us to be in our bodies and in the world without being made busy by them. It leaves us free to think without being wholly lost in our thoughts.” -Rebecca Solnit from Wanderlust: A History of Walking
