Research shows that homework at the elementary level is not an effective use of time, effort, or energy from students or teachers. In order to create time to spend on the most important activities, LCSD elementary schools should use the following guidelines when assigning homework.
Homework should be assigned as follows:
20 minutes of reading K-2
30 minutes of reading 3-5
Students are allowed to have cell phones as long as they are kept powered off in their backpacks or in their teacher's safe designated space during the school day. Smart watches must be turned to school mode with no internet access or photo access during the school day. This allows better communication between the student and their teacher as well as at home.
The student will be given a warning the first time this policy is violated.
The second time the student will be asked to take their phone down to the office where it will be safely stored until the end of the day. The principal will then contact the parent to create an action plan together to make sure needs are being met.
If the policy is broken a third time the parent/guardian will need to come pick up their student's phone and will revise the plan previously created with the student, teacher, parent/guardian, and principal.
Parents may request exceptions to this policy for documented health or emergency reasons, including those reasons addressed through a 504 Plan or Individualized Education Plan. These requests should be submitted to the school principal.
Treats and snacks are allowed within the confines of the classroom under the teacher’s direction. Treats brought to school by the parents, if cleared with the teacher, must be purchased from a store and arranged to be given at a time which will not interfere with the regular school schedule.
On healthy air days and days when the weather permits, all students will be expected to go outside for school and class recesses. If your child needs to stay inside due to a medical condition, please send a note or contact the office. Students are welcome to bring labeled sports equipment that is going to be used safely and appropriately at recess. Equipment needs to be left in a backpack or given to their classroom teacher until used. We use http://air.utah.gov/ to determine what the air quality is.
The mission of Woodruff Elementary Media Center is to provide an enjoyable and welcoming place for students, teachers, and staff to find books, resources, and materials that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning. This is the heart and soul of our school, a place where students can find enjoyable books to read and information that will help them become lifelong learners.
Students may checkout and return books during their weekly library class and during the school day with permission from their classroom teacher. Books are checked out for 2 weeks at a time. The numbers of books students are allowed to check out are as follows: Kindergarten and 1st grade - 1 book and 2nd - 5th grades - 2 books. Click on our school catalog to find out what books are available in our library
Field trips must be organized and planned so they directly relate to the curriculum in an articulated and coordinated manner. They may be used to place a variety of civic, cultural, community, and business resources within reach of the classroom. Principal approval of all field trips is required. Notification of the field trip should be given to parents well in advance of the activity. Students who participate in field trip activities must have a district release form signed by a parent or legal guardian in order to participate. Parent or legal guardian approval by phone is not acceptable. All students are expected to purchase the sack lunch that is provided by the school unless they qualify for free lunch.
We advise parents to label all items that might be lost by children. “Lost and Found” items are hanging on the coat hooks in the entryway near the new gym. Clothing or other unclaimed articles will be donated to a charitable organization.
Please note that the school will not facilitate custodial visitations. It is a reasonable expectation that parents will work out visitation during non-school hours. Students will only be released to those custodians and emergency contacts in the students profile (ID will be required). If you have concerns regarding custodial visitation or access, please contact the Principal regarding your situation.
We encourage all parents and grandparents to volunteer per your circumstances. Please contact your child’s teacher to volunteer. For the safety of students, everyone entering the building during school hours must first check in at the office.
Our mascot is the Wildcat and the school colors are blue and yellow. We like to celebrate our school spirit on the last school day of every week by wearing school colors or school shirts.
Orchestra is offered to 4th and 5th grade children interested in instrumental music instruction. Enrollment information is available at the office. For more information, visit their page at: http://www.mountainweststrings.com/
