The Student Leadership Institute (SLI) is a weeklong residential summer program designed to encourage college attendance among children of migratory farmworkers who have demonstrated leadership skills in high school and through community service activity. Students will experience Murray State University campus life as they spend a week living and eating in college dorms and attending classes and workshops taught by educated professionals. Students will also tour the campus and receive important admissions and financial aid information they will be able to apply across the board to all college admissions. In addition, students will attend workshops on preparing for the workforce. A host of recreational activities are planned throughout the week as well. The SLI enhances participants' leadership skills through a series of interactive workshops, lectures, and discussion groups that promote academic development, verbal communication skills, and personal development.
SLI is an initiative of the WKRMEP. It is modeled after the PA Migrant SLI which has positively impacted the lives of migrant students and their attitudes toward pursuing higher education for the past twenty-five years. Funding for the SLI is appropriated under Section 1002 (f) of Title I Part C
Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

I am excited to apply for the Student Leadership Institute (SLI) this summer to further develop my leadership skills. Although I have led a robotics team to second place in the past, I am eager to continue learning and growing as a leader. Through my participation in robotics clubs, soccer sports, and volunteer work at the humane society and as an English tutor, I have gained a deep appreciation for teamwork and community service.
As the child of migratory farmworkers, I believe I fit the description of your program: someone who has demonstrated leadership skills in high school and through community service activity. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to attend the SLI and gain valuable insights and knowledge about leadership.
Equipped with this information and experience, I believe I can make a positive impact on my community. I would appreciate any information I can learn while attending like cost, potential career paths, and expected length of University.
My education and career goal is to pursue a degree in computer science. I am passionate about the potential of technology to make a positive impact in the world, particularly for disadvantaged communities. With the internet's ability to connect people and provide access to information, I believe that we have a unique opportunity to use technology to address global issues such as poverty and hunger. By becoming a computer scientist, I hope to be a part of a community of leaders who can use technology to create solutions that make a difference in people's lives.
The most influential person in my life is my mother. From a young age, I was inspired by her resilience and work ethic. Despite facing numerous challenges, including working in tobacco fields and on farms, she always remained optimistic and focused on providing for our family. Her unwavering determination and encouragement have motivated me to pursue a career and strive for success. She taught me the importance of hard work, but also emphasized the value of finding happiness and joy in life. Her positive attitude and strength continue to inspire me every day.
One of the most important issues in my community today is mental health. I have seen firsthand how difficult it can be for individuals, including myself, to navigate the challenges of mental health. With so much negativity in the world and the ease of access to drugs, it's important that we focus on providing professional resources and support to those who need it in order to prevent harm to our community.
