Investigation #2 Build A Chain Reaction Machine

Part 1 This is the understanding stage. A chain reaction is a complex machine that performs a very simple task in a very complicated way. Watch the videos below to get an idea of what one could look like and some inspiration for the next stage. . .

Part 2 This is the planning stage. Use your imagination. Grab a piece of paper and start sketching out your ideas, just like the picture you see above. Think about using everyday items like spoons, dominoes, hot wheel tracks, blocks, and paper cups. Look around your house for a place to set it up and make use of gravity by including stairs, tables, ramps, etc. to make it more interesting. Involve your whole family.

Part 3 This is the set up stage. Following your sketch, start building. Be patient as this part will probably take the most time. As you set up your machine do it in stages and test each stage for reliability. If something doesn't work consistently consider changing that piece of the machine.

Part 4 This is the action stage, the best part, and the one where your creative ideas and hard work pay off. Don't be disappointed if it all doesn't work perfectly. Be proud of what did work! Take a video of your chain reaction machine in motion, and celebrate your accomplishment by sharing it with friends, family members, and your classroom teacher. Enjoy the experience!
