Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law which prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) extends this prohibition against discrimination to the full range of state and local government services, programs, or activities. Together, Lockhart Independent School District (LISD) refers to these laws as “Section 504.” Please review these helpful documents to learn more:
If your student is new to our district and is coming with a Section 504 plan from another district, please contact the campus Section 504 or the Campus Principal to let them know your child has a Section 504 plan. When your student starts school, the previous plan will be honored immediately. A Section 504 meeting will be held within 30 school days to adjust the plan appropriately for the new environment.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act places the responsibility for identifying and locating students with disabilities on the school. A school/district must annually undertake efforts to "identify and locate" every qualified individual with a disability residing in the school's jurisdiction who is not receiving a public education.
