Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Early College High School (ECHS) Program at Lockhart High School?

The ECHS program at Lockhart High School is an incredible opportunity for students to earn both a high school diploma and up to 60 college credits—or even an associate degree—while still in high school! This program is designed for students who want to take charge of their futures, especially those from historically underrepresented groups such as first-generation college students, at-risk students, and economically disadvantaged students. With free dual credit courses, accelerated learning, and personalized academic and social support, ECHS is your fast-track to college and career success. Plus, we partner with top Texas colleges to make your transition to higher education smooth and achievable!

Do I have to pay to enroll in the ECHS Program at Lockhart High School?

Nope! The Early College High School program is completely no cost to the student or family. You’ll earn college credits and save thousands of dollars in tuition costs.

Can I participate in extracurricular activities like UIL Athletics, Band, or Fine Arts as an ECHS student?

Yes, you can! As an ECHS student at Lockhart High School, you still get to experience all the extracurricular activities you love—whether that’s sports, band, theater, or any other activity LHS offers. You get the best of both worlds: college credits and a full high school experience!

What’s the difference between ECHS, Advanced Placement (AP), and traditional dual credit?

While all options give you a chance to earn college credits, ECHS takes it to the next level! ECHS students not only earn a high school diploma but also an Associate of Arts in General Studies from Austin Community College (ACC) by the time they graduate. This means you leave high school with a degree in hand! Plus, the ECHS program follows the Lockhart ISD Distinguished with Honors plan, which qualifies you for automatic (Top 10%) admission to Texas state universities. AP courses require you to pass exams for potential credit, while dual credit courses outside of ECHS often come with costs. With ECHS, it’s free and you get guaranteed credits!

What are the requirements for the ACC Associate of Arts in General Studies?

To earn your Associate of Arts degree, you’ll complete 60 college credits in areas like Communication, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Creative Arts, American History, and Government. It’s a broad foundation that prepares you for success at any four-year university.

Where is the ECHS Program located? Where do I take my classes?

The ECHS program is right here at Lockhart High School! During your freshman and sophomore years, you’ll attend classes at LHS, just like other students. For your junior and senior years, you’ll be transported to Austin Community College (ACC) to take college-level courses, following the ACC academic calendar. It's like experiencing college life early!
