About Mrs. Personius

This is my third year teaching at Mesa Middle School, I love it here! I grew up in Atascadero and graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2018, where I earned a Bachelor Science degree in Biology with an emphasis in Marine Science and Conservation. In the past I have coached Water Polo, instructed Junior Lifeguards in Avila Beach, and tutored high school students. Some of my interests outside of teaching include surfing, hiking, camping, lifeguarding, music, and getting outside with friends and family.

All assignments are numbered and listed on aeries. If there is a red box, then your student has not turned in the assignment! Help them become more independent by assisting them in emailing their teacher!

Please encourage your students to advocate for themselves and contact me personally with any and all questions/concerns.

If you find your student: is not ready for total academic independence, is struggling with class material, or has outside factors that are affecting their in class performance, please contact me!

Intro to 8th Grade Science

Welcome scientists!

In 8th grade we will investigate many different disciplines of science while building our science skill set. This class is aligned with the NGSS Integrated System. Check out the what we will cover below!

Unit 1: Earth's Place in the Universe

How does gravity influence the structures and systems of the universe?
How do scientists use the Earth-Sun-Moon system to predict and communicate the phenomena patterns we see on Earth?Earth-moon-sun interactions (MS-ESS-1), scale properties (MS-ESS-3), and the role gravity plays in our universe (MS-ESS-2).

Unit 3: Matter in Motion

How can the interactions between objects be described, explained and predicted?
How are some objects able to interact at distances?
What role does energy play in the motion of objects?Introduction to physics and the laws of motion (MS-PS2-1). Students will investigate interactions between objects (MS-PS2-2,3,4,5) and the energy involved (MS-PS3-1, MS-PS3-2).

Unit 2: Earth's History and Diversity

What evidence is used to support the claim that throughout Earth’s 4.6 billion years, life on Earth has changed in response to changes in Earth’s four systems?Constructing explanations about earth’s history by using rock strata (MS-ESS1-4). Students will then interpret patterns in fossil evidence (MS-LS4-1) by comparing anatomical similarities (MS-LS4-2) and embryological development (MS-LS4-3). They will further explore these connections by using mathematical representations to support the theory of natural selection (MS-LS4-6) through the mechanisms of genetic variation (MS-LS4-4) and genetic mutation (MS-LS3-1).

Unit 4: Waves in Action

How do waves transfer energy and information?How amplitude and energy are related (MS-PS4-1). Students will also use models to represent how waves interact with various materials. (MS-PS4-2). Students will also engage in argument by comparing digital and analog wave signals (MS-PS4-3).
