Throughout this year, we will focus on real communication in Spanish. We will read, interpret and listen to authentic materials, and we will speak and write in the target language. We will engage in real world communication, expand our cultural horizons, make connections with the Hispanic community worldwide, and make comparisons and common ground with cultures that may not be so familiar to us. I am here to help!
There are four guiding principles to keep our classroom a safe, comfortable place for everyone.
Respeto
Be respectful of our space, and be respectful of each other.
When someone else is talking, you are listening. Follow our class procedures for raising your hand - this will be a little different in a virtual/hybrid learning environment.
Be patient, and be kind.
Responsibilidad
You are responsible for your own learning! Make sure you complete all your assignments on time, and to the best of your ability.
Be proactive! If you are struggling, be your own advocate and schedule time during WIN to get extra help early. Try not to wait until the last minute to get the help you need.
Come to class with ALL the required materials, every day.
Participación
The best way to practice your new language skills is to use them. We will primarily speak Spanish in class. It's important to take advantage of the opportunities to use the language as much as possible.
You must participate in the daily live sessions, assignments, discussions, and review activities, whether you are participating from home or from school.
Sé atrevido/a, and take a chance. It's okay to make mistakes - it is how we learn.
Productividad
Arrive on time and ready to work.
Make the most of your class time. Follow directions and stay on task.
Every day, you should bring the following items to class:
Writing utensil (pencils are best, everyone makes mistakes!)
Binder with dividers and lined paper.
I recommend you have FIVE sections: Warm ups, notes, vocabulary, handouts, assessments
If you are attending virtually, you may want to PRINT these resources to keep in your binder, or keep them virtually filed in a similar manner.
Chromebook: fully charged at the beginning of each day!!
Stoplight indicators: this will be a comprehension tooll. I will explain in depth in class.
There are two categories for your grade.
Assessments count for 85% of your total grade. This section is comprised of major projects, speaking, listening, reading and writing assessments.
Classwork counts for 15% of your total grade. The Classwork category includes in independent and group classwork, and independent homework.
It is your responsibility to make up any work you missed while you were absent. All assigned work is posted to Google Classroom. You will be given the equivalent of days missed to make up the missed work. For example, if you miss one day of school, you will have one day to make up the work after you have returned and retrieved it. If the work is not completed within the permitted time, it will result in a zero.
It is very important to complete all assigned tasks on time and to the best of your ability. Late work will result in a reduction on the final grade for the assignment.
Keep up with your work! It can be very difficult to catch up if you allow yourself to fall behind. If you find yourself struggling, ask for help and make an appointment to come see me during WIN. Learning a language is an active process. You must engage with the language as much as possible to have the best results.
On my website and on our Google Classroom page, you can find links to active study tools such as Quizlet, Gimkit and review videos. I strongly recommend spending at least ten minutes every night actively studying Spanish.
