Reading

Pre-Literacy

Ways to build pre-literacy and read skills in your child

  • Read a book to your child

  • While reading, be sure to ask your child about the story:

    • What do you think will happen next?

    • Who are the characters?

    • What happened?

    • Retell the story

    • Talk about your favorite part of the story. Why was it your favorite?

  • You Tube has video read alouds if you'd like your child to enjoy some books that you do not have in your home.

  • Letter names and letter sound practice. Our Distance Curriculum packs have many practice ideas for you.

Writing Practice

    • Do the Interactive lesson Recipe for Writing with your child. Instead of writing, have your child draw a picture and orally tell you about the story. Be sure to include the Who? Where? What? and Ending.

    • Use pencils, crayons and pens to practice letter writing.

    • Use a yellow highlighter to write letters. Have your child trace the letters.

    • Use sidewalk chalk outside to draw a story or practice writing.
