Friends of Orono Schools was launched in January 2024 as a new way to support a broad range of activities and needs at the Orono Schools. The Orono Boosters that have actively run concession stands at sporting events in Orono for decades, without being a nonprofit organization, is now part of Friends of Orono Schools. Friends looks forward to growing the support for our schools in this broader, more formal capacity, bringing in alumni, parents of all students, and residents to support the legacy and ensure the future of our community schools.
Friends of Orono Schools has incorporated with the State of Maine and applied for 501c3 nonprofit status with the Internal Revenue Service. We expect to get that confirmed by summer 2024. In the meantime, we have met the RSU26 School Board and staff leadership and they support our efforts and will serve as a nonprofit fiscal sponsor for the short term.
Friends of Orono Schools is a fully volunteer run organization so all donations go straight to supporting the schools. The board of directors as of January 28, 2024 include:
Catherine Thibedeau, Orono parent and Boosters Vice President
Julie Hartery, Glenburn parent and Boosters President
Erica Tweedie, Orono parent and Treasurer
Laura Mitchell, Orono parent and Secretary
Mike Archer, Orono High School Athletic Director
