Key Stage 4 Options

Year 9 is an exciting time at La Mare. It is the year when decisions have to be made about the courses you will follow in year 10 and 11. The decisions taken now are important because the subjects you choose to study and the qualifications that you gain can affect the range of jobs, training and further/ higher education courses that are open to you at 16 and beyond.

You may not know exactly what you want to do in the future yet so it is important that you choose courses that will offer you a wide range of skills and qualifications so that you broaden your opportunities in later life.

The information included on this website is designed to ensure you know the courses you will be studying and the choices you have.

The school has thought carefully about the sort of courses that will give you the best chance of academic success.  Discussions have taken place with your teachers and Heads of Department to make sure that we offer you the most appropriate choices for your future.

You will need to:

• Think about what your strengths are

• Think about your likes and dislikes

• Think about what you really enjoy and may like to study in the future

• Consider the path you wish to take after Year 11 (Sixth Form, College, Apprenticeship or Work)

• Find out exactly what a course involves to make sure that you choose the right one for you (not just what your friends are doing)

• Discuss your ideas with others, especially your teachers and parents
