My World, Your World, Our World
The phrase “Nothing about us without us” was adopted by the Disabilities Rights Movement to state their demand that policies should not be decided by any representative without the full and direct participation of members of the group(s) affected by those policies.
In my drawing I described a scene where you are at a person's total color blindness where you can’t see any color but only black, white, and any shade in between that. This disability really stood out to me because it shows me how color can impact someone's life. The message of this artwork is to spread awareness that even with a disability in vision you are still able to live in the same world as anybody else. In my art piece I included a landscape of New York City. NYC is very important to me because this is where I grew up and where I come from. In the lens of the glasses. I included colors whereas there’s no color when it comes to outside of the lens. I used watercolor especially around the lens because I want to show others that the world can also be seen as pretty even without color. This is significant because having a disability is something that you can’t control, therefore the best way to live life is to be happy with it.
Overall I feel confident about my artwork because I believe that this can make society normalize disability where there will not be discrimination and judgments. However, something that I want to keep in mind is that in my artwork I should include more variety to disability than just including vision. This allows the world to be aware that people with disabilities are also human like themselves.
