Features of Our English Curriculum

Our curriculum emphasizes systematic acquisition of major language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and the joy of English reading and learning through:

• The development of children’s literature units:

  • The four language strands, values and attitudes are organized and blended into each unit to provide meaningful and authentic learning to our students

  • The love of reading and cultural awareness is instilled in our students through being immersed in children’s literature

• A student-centred approach:

  • Experiential and hands-on activities provide active learning and let students experience joy in learning

• A co-teaching approach:

  • Teaching in small groups provides differentiated instruction to recognize students’ diverse learning needs and interests

• The integration of technologies in language learning

  • A range of online platforms and learning apps are integrated in our English curriculum to raise students joy in learning and allow them to develop the IT skills needed to succeed in the modern world

• The use of continuous multi-modal assessments

  • Regular feedback from a range of assessments is provided to students to facilitate language goal achievement so they can succeed in English learning.

Our English curriculum extends beyond classroom and students’ English learning is supported by this three-tiered support model.  This model emphasizes systematic teaching, scaffolding and application of English foundational knowledge and skills throughout students’ elementary years.  

The inner blue circle means that students acquire English knowledge, skills, values and attitudes through in-class lesson activities.  

The pink middle layer shows that students’ in-class English learning is supported by school-wide English activities that take place out of classrooms.  

The green outer layer means that students’ English learning is extended to beyond-school contexts, which allows authentic application of students’ English knowledge and skills and will in turn strengthen students’ language knowledge and skills learnt in class.
