Canvas Assignment Types Teacher View

This page gives teachers a breakdown of the different assignment types in Canvas. Screenshots are included as a visual of how to assign each type.

Text Entry Assignments

Text Entry is best used when students are asked to type out a response. This is done right within Canvas. No external apps needed. It is the easiest type of online submission

Website URL Assignments

Website URL is best used when a teacher will request a website link from students.

Media & Audio Recording Assignments

Media Recordings are used when a teacher request students to do a video response. Students can record right within Canvas and submit directly. No external apps needed

File Upload Assignment Types

Students can submit a photo if the teacher assigns a file upload submission type. This is used when students need to take a photo or scan something and submit it. No external apps are needed.

File Upload types on iPad:

Camera: Take a picture within Canvas to submit
Library: Upload photos/videos from your camera roll library. These may be pictures you have taken previously using the Camera app.
Files: Documents you have saved in the Files App. May include Keynote, Numbers, or Pages documents.
Scanner: Scans text on a paper to upload with better quality.

PDF Assignment Types

PDF Submissions are used when a teacher wants to assign a document that students can markup and complete digitally on Canvas. The assignment must be uploaded as a PDF in the rich text editor window. Students complete the assignment within Canvas with no external tools needed and the teacher can view it on Speedgrader.

*If students are using the app they will be able to use the markup tools within Canvas*If students are using the web browser they will need to download the file and upload back to Canvas

Assigning an iWork Assignment (Keynote, Pages, Numbers Template)

iWork Assignment can be used when a teacher has a template saved in their Macbook or iPad and they would like to send each student a copy of their own to complete. Students open the document in Canvas and select "copy to (keynote, pages, numbers)"
Considerations: It is recommended to use this if you would like students to use the iWork tools to add creativity to their assignments.There are two ways students can submit iWork Assignments
  1. As a Keynote, Numbers, Pages document
  2. Export to a Movie or PDF so the teacher can download, view and grade the final product more easier


Student Created Assignment submission

If a student has created a document inside the iWorks apps from a blank new page the teacher can assign an assignment page for them to upload that document from that app.
Considerations: Students may need to familiarize themselves with the iWork tools prior to being assigned this type of submission. If you would like to view submitted work easier students must share to Canvas as a movie or PDF file otherwise the teacher must download each file as a document fil type.

A Collaborative Assignment using iWorks

To Collaborate iWork apps with students they must be signed into the Managed Apple ID accounts. Each student Managed ID account must be entered in the Collaboration settings. The link can be copied into Canvas for students to open.
Considerations: Students may need to familiarize themselves with the iWork tools and collaboration best practices prior to being assigned this type of submission.

A Google Assignment Template

Assigning a Google assignment can be used when a teacher has a template saved in their google drive and they would like to send each student a copy of their own to complete.
Considerations: It is recommended to use this if you would like students to use the G-Suite tools to add creativity to their assignment or interact with the document.

  1. Google Assignments LTI: Instructors use Google Assignments to distribute and collect student work.

A non-template Assignment submission

If a student has created a document inside their G-suite from a blank new page the teacher can assign an assignment page for them to upload that document from their drive. Considerations: Students may need to familiarize themselves with the G-Suite tools prior to being assigned this type of submission.

A Collaborative Assignment using G-Suite

A teacher can assign a document for students to work collaboratively. The shared URL link and Student's ID# may be needed. Considerations: Students may need to familiarize themselves with the G-Suite tools and best practices for collaborative document sharing prior to being assigned this type of submission.
