Message from the Interim Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers,
As we reach the end of a busy and successful first half of the Autumn Term, we would like to thank all of our pupils, families and staff for their hard work, enthusiasm and support. The children have made a wonderful start to the school year and should be very proud of all they have achieved so far.
Thank you for your continued support. We have particularly loved having you join us for the PACT sessions throughout this autumn term and it was wonderful to welcome our Reception parents in today for the Foundation Phase harvest celebration.
We wish all of our families a happy and enjoyable half-term break and look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting half term when we return on Monday 2nd November 2026. Hope you have a FAN...TASTIC week off!
Mrs Pegington

We have recently received confirmation that inspectors from Estyn will be visiting the school between 2nd and 4th November 2026 for a follow-up inspection. This visit follows our previous inspection in June 2025 and will focus on the progress the school has made in addressing the recommendations identified at that time. We look forward to welcoming inspectors and sharing the developments made across the school. We will, of course, keep you updated on the outcome of the visit once it is available.
Our Head Boy and Head Girl were proud to represent our school at the Grand Council Community and Citizenship event.
They took part in a range of engaging workshops, learning about dementia awareness, anti-racism, teamwork and the important role of the Council in preparing for emergencies and supporting our community. They listened carefully, shared their ideas confidently and worked with children from other schools. We were particularly proud of their maturity, kindness and excellent behaviour throughout the day.
They represented our school beautifully and were fantastic ambassadors for our school community.
Despite the wet weather, Year 1 had a great time walking to Black Ash Park.
We looked at the different buildings and features of our local area, which we have been focusing on as part of our topic, and the children were particularly excited to see the geese alongside the reen.
Children are now wondering what other animals call our local area their home too. After returning to school, children recounted their walk, drawing fantastic maps to show their walking route.
Well done Year 1!
The children in Year 2 visited St Fagan's to learn about life in Wales over the past 200 years. They visited the Gwalia stores to see how people would have shopped, no tappng your phone to pay for things there! They also saw what a school looked like 100 years ago and how houses have developed. They even visited a one room house that would have seen up ten people living in it...very cosy! We were so proud of how the children behaved, they were a credit to the school and to you, the parents.
Over the last week our Parent and Child Together (PACT) sessions have taken place with parents and carers of children in Year 5.
The children have had a wonderful time sharing their learning with their grown ups. The children shared their knowledge of place value and counting, showing their parents how to use place value counters and Dienes. They used 'Maths Talk' to show them how they can explain their thinking, and reason how more than one answer could be correct!
Thank you so much for coming, your support is greatly appreciated.
Year 3 have been very enthusiastic learners over the past two weeks, working hard to design and build a Roman village as part of our 'Stronger Together' topic. We researched different types of Roman buildings, created architect plans and then co-operated with our teams to make our fabulous buildings using junk materials.
We collaborated as a year group to put all the buildings together in the hall and had the opportunity to share our work with our friends - it was all very exciting and everyone agreed there were some very impressive creations! Finally, we applied our maths skills by directing our teachers around our village using the language we had learned in maths lessons to give clear instructions to get to a chosen destination. Super teamwork everyone!
A huge thank you to all the families who joined us for our 'Stay and Play' PACT session. It was so lovely to see you playing, exploring and having fun with your children, and we really enjoyed seeing you meet some of their new Nursery friends too!
We would like to remind all parents and carers that, for the safety of everyone, children should not play football or ride bikes or scooters on the school site when arriving in the morning or leaving at the end of the school day. Children who are not being collected by a parent or carer should leave the school premises promptly and directly after school, rather than staying on site. Thank you for your cooperation and support in helping us to keep our school environment safe for all children, families and staff.
Reception have enjoyed learning the story of the Little Red Hen.
They have followed the recipe and written instructions to make their own bread.
We all agreed the best part was tasting the bread. Blasus iawn!
We hope you enjoyed our performanmce story in our Harvest festival too!
We are holding an open evening for prospective parents/carers of children who are due to start Reception in September 2027. This open evening will take place on Wednesday 11th October 2026 at 5pm. We look forward to welcoming you to Lliswerry Primary School, where together we 'Belong. Empower. Aspire.'
Applications open for Newport City Council Schools on Friday 13th November 2026.

We would like to thank all parents and carers who attended our Autumn Term consultation meetings. Your support, engagement and partnership with school are invaluable in helping your child achieve their very best. We very much appreciate the opportunity to discuss your child's progress and how they have setttled into their new class routines. We look forward to continuing to work together throughout the year.
We had a wonderful time celebrating Harvest across the school! In the morning, we welcomed our Reception parents to a lovely assembly featuring songs and readings from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
The children sang beautifully, and it was fantastic to see so many parents joining us to support and celebrate their achievements. In the afternoon, Years 3 to 6 came together for their own Harvest celebration, with combined and individual contributions from each year group. Year 6 even treated us to a brilliant Harvest rap! Alongside the celebrations, we have been collecting donations for Raven House Trust, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has contributed. It has been a wonderful community effort, with our children, families and staff coming together to celebrate the spirit of Harvest and the importance of helping others.
A 'BIG' shout out to Friends of Lliswerry for creating such an amazing harvest table with all the donations received.

Please see the attached chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 91.7% which is below the expected but is showing signs of improvement. It is so important we must keep working together to achieve our target.
If your child is unwell please contact the school office.
FPN Information
Regular attendance at school is required by law. The Welsh Government has reintroduced the use of Fixed Penalty Notices for non-school attendance. Schools in Newport, including Lliswerry Primary, have resumed issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for unauthorised absences from school, including holidays. From September 2023, Fixed Penalty Notices can be issued if a child has 10 sessions/5 days of unauthorised absence. The fine is issued by Newport City Council and is currently set at £60 if paid in the first 28 days. Non-payment within this time means the fine increases to £120. Non-payment of the fine may result in prosecution. Please click the link to view more information about Fixed Penalty Notices.
For the safety of all pupils, staff and visitors, e-bikes, electric scooters and scooters are not permitted on the school site. These are not to be ridden or brought onto school grounds at any time. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe environment for all.
To help keep our school site safe and comfortable for all children, staff and visitors, dogs are not permitted on the school premises at any time, including when being carried or held. The only exception is for registered assistance dogs. Thank you for your understanding.
Being on time is important!
Arriving on time gives your child the best start to the day and gives them access to all of the support their teacher can offer from the second they walk through the door.

Be polite, respectful and do our best to resolve your questions and queries;
Try to get back to you in a timely manner. Please remember our staff are very busy and they have daily teaching commitments. We will always try to get back to you within 48 hours but please understand this is not always possible;
Pass your query on to someone who can help if we are unable to assist you.
In return, we ask that you:
Treat our staff with politeness and respect;
Do not contact us to vent anger or frustration. We understand that something may have caused you or your child distress but please try to communicate with us in a calm and respectful manner to allow us to try to help you quickly and efficiently;
Accept that staff may not be able to respond to you immediately and please remember that we do not expect our staff to work at weekends;
Allow us to explain our reasons for decisions, which are always made in a considered and timely manner.
