Message from the Interim Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers,
It has been another busy and productive couple of weeks at school, with our children continuing to work incredibly hard and thoroughly enjoying the many learning experiences on offer. With just two weeks remaining until half term, we have lots to look forward to, including our Harvest celebrations, Parent Consultation meetings and PACT sessions.
As always, thank you for your continued support. We greatly value the strong partnership between home and school, which plays such an important role in helping our children thrive and achieve their very best.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Consultations for the Autumn term will take place week commencing Monday 12th October. Please be reminded that these consultations are face to face in the school halls. A link via Parent Booking has been sent out for you to select the slot with your child's teacher. Any problems please contact the school office.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Miss O'Shaughnessy's Year 2 consultations and Mrs Doolan's Year 1 consultations will not be taking place next week. We will let parents know when future dates are set.
Here is some information provided by the School Nursing Service, regarding the flu Vaccine for your child. The School Nursing Service will visit the school to offer pupils a nasal flu spray vaccine on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th October.
The online consent form and more information can be found here: E- Consent Form Link .
We encourage all parents/carers to complete a consent form for their child or young person, regardless of whether they wish them to receive the vaccination. The NHS recommends that your child has a flu vaccination every year. It is very important to protect your child from flu to make sure they stay as healthy as possible. The best flu vaccine for most children is a nasal spray, however there is a gelatine free/inactivated injectable option available. To help make sure the vaccine is suitable for your child, and they don’t miss out, please take time to read the information and follow the link to complete the electronic consent form as soon as possible, before the planned vaccination date.
***If your child is under the care of a healthcare professional and their advice is required before vaccination, please ensure the consent form is submitted at least 3 working days before the session date. Consent forms received later than this may result in your child being unable to receive their vaccine at the school session and instead will be invited to a community clinic. The nasal spray flu vaccine that contains porcine gelatine is the best protection against flu for children. If you want to have your child protected against Flu, but you do not want them to have the nasal spray, you can request the gelatine free injection instead on the consent form and you may be invited to a clinic.
Should you have any difficulties accessing the above link, please contact 01633 431685 for further support.
Last week our year 6 pupils attended Lliswerry High School for a curriculum day. The children took part in engaging lessons and had a taster of what they will be experiencing during next academic year. We were so proud of the pupils' excellent behaviour and enthusiasm. They had an excellent day!
Year 2 enjoyed our visit to Tesco. We discussed the prices of the food, chose our own fruit and scanned it through the till. Well done Year 2 you were a joy to take, beautiful manners and very respectful to everyone you met.
In preparation to make our Autumn soup we decided to take a trip down to our food share and uniform shop to buy some pumpkins. We used our amazing counting skills to pay for our pumpkins! It was wonderful to see the children's excitement in picking a pumpkin ready to take back to class. We are very excited to make our soup next week!
Year 3 have been working on some beautiful artwork to show 'Cynefin'. We have combined a Celtic knot and a Roman mosaic together by completing one piece of artwork each and putting it together. We added straight, curved and circular lines to build depth in our mosaic piece. We enjoyed working together and creating a joint piece of artwork. Keep an eye out to see if you can spot it on our windows!
Look at these! We have had lots of fun making big lines, swirls and circles with our brushes. Our hands, fingers and arms have been working hard as we painted, moved and made our own wonderful marks!
Thank you to all of the families who supported our Book Fair last week. We hope you have been enjoying the new books and stationary items that you purchased. It was lovely to see so many of you there and the children all enjoyed having the opportunity to share a book from the fair with their class. Thanks to all of your purchases, we have raised £459.42 in rewards for us to spend on new books to further enrich the reading curriculum here at Lliswerry.
We are continually working on our attendance at school. Remember not to take holidays in term time. Poor attendance can significantly impact on the well-being and academic attainment of your child.
Please see the attached chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 91.8% which is below the expected but is showing signs of improvement. It is so important we must keep working together to achieve our target.
If your child is unwell please contact the school office.
FPN Information
Regular attendance at school is required by law. The Welsh Government has reintroduced the use of Fixed Penalty Notices for non-school attendance. Schools in Newport, including Lliswerry Primary, have resumed issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for unauthorised absences from school, including holidays. From September 2023, Fixed Penalty Notices can be issued if a child has 10 sessions/5 days of unauthorised absence. The fine is issued by Newport City Council and is currently set at £60 if paid in the first 28 days. Non-payment within this time means the fine increases to £120. Non-payment of the fine may result in prosecution. Please click the link to view more information about Fixed Penalty Notices.
