Message from the Interim Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers,
What a busy but brilliant few weeks it has been at Lliswerry! It has been wonderful to see all of our children continue to settle well into the new school year, particularly our Reception pupils who are attending full time and have made such a fantastic start to their learning journey.
Some highlights over the last few weeks have been listening to our Head Boy and Head Girl manifestos and seeing the fantastic home learning tasks completed across the school, especially having the pleasure of tasting some delicious treats made by our Year 6 pupils! Also, our Year 5 classes have recently completed a three-week intensive swimming programme and we congratulate them on the tremendous progress they have made. We have also been delighted by the excellent attendance from parents/carers at our Maths-focused PACT (Parent and Child Time) sessions. Thank you to all who have attended so far. We hope many more families will be able to join us for the upcoming sessions still to take place.
As always, thank you for your unwavering support. Wishing all our amazing Lliswerry families a wonderful weekend!
Mrs Pegington

Hello! We are Evren and Emilee, newly appointed Head Boy and Head Girl at Lliswerry Primary School. Our Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl are Josh and Jamie who are joining our team too.
We are so excited with our new roles we are looking forward to representing the school and trying to make it even better than it is already! We are proud to be taking on the responsibility this year.
Another Friday...another group of superstar children celebrating with Mrs Pegington! Week on week this is a highlight of the day for children to spend quality time with their Headteacher and share a drink and a biscuit. We are as usual so proud of these positive role models and all they do at Lliswerry in learning and play! Keep it up everyone!

We are continually working on our attendance at school. Remember not to take holidays in term time. Poor attendance can significantly impact on the well-being and academic attainment of your child.
Please see the attached chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 90% which is below the expected. It is so important we must keep working together to achieve our target.
If your child is unwell please contact the school office.
FPN Information
Regular attendance at school is required by law. The Welsh Government has reintroduced the use of Fixed Penalty Notices for non-school attendance. Schools in Newport, including Lliswerry Primary, have resumed issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for unauthorised absences from school, including holidays. From September 2023, Fixed Penalty Notices can be issued if a child has 10 sessions/5 days of unauthorised absence. The fine is issued by Newport City Council and is currently set at £60 if paid in the first 28 days. Non-payment within this time means the fine increases to £120. Non-payment of the fine may result in prosecution. Please click the link to view more information about Fixed Penalty Notices.
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils, children will no longer be permitted to bring in birthday cakes or any food items for distribution within their class. We understand that birthdays are special occasions and we will continue to recognise and celebrate each child’s birthday in school in alternative ways that are safe and inclusive for everyone.
We appreciate your understanding and support in helping us maintain a safe environment for all members of our school community.
Over the last 2 weeks the first of our PACT sessions have taken place with parents and carers of children in Year 2 and Year 6.
The children have had a wonderful time sharing their learning with their grown ups. The children shared their knowledge of Place Value and counting, showing their parents how to use Numicon, Place Value Boards and Dienes to explode our numbers into tens and units in Year 2. In Year 6 they used 'Maths Talk' to show them how they can explain their thinking, and reason how more than one answer could be correct!
Thank you so much for coming, your support is greatly appreciated.
Longmeadow Court Opening
We were very grateful to be invited to the opening ceremony of Longmeadow Court.
A group of children attended and had a wonderful time. The Mayoress of Newport opened the new development and a number of stalls and activities were provided for the children as a 'thank you' for their involvement in the community development projects.
Many thanks to Hedyn for the invite. We look forward to seeing further developments in our community.
Nursery - Me, You and Us
What a busy and exciting few weeks! After the excitement of finding pears on the tree in our Nursery garden, morning Nursery made pear crumble. It was delicious!
Afternoon Nursery had a pizza party, their pizza's were so colourful and deliziosa!
Year 1 kicked off their topic with a fabulous trip to Little Oaks Town on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th September! They immersed themselves within the role play areas at the venue.
From vets to firemen, builders to theatrical performers, and hairdressers to shopkeepers, we saw it all! It was lovely for the children to experience what different communities have available in their area and how it compares to Lliswerry.
We must also point out how proud we are of all the learners - their behaviour was exemplary. They walked over safely and they were all a credit to our school. We can't wait to see where this topic takes us.
The children have already shared their opinions on what they want to learn next - it looks like a fun and exciting term ahead!
We have been so impressed with the amazing home learning children in Year 4 have been completing. Children have been busy cooking traditional meals from their home country (we had the pleasure of sampling some delicious Welsh cakes) and creating artwork to represent what 'home' means to them. We are so proud of you - keep it up Year 4!
Year 5 have loved diving into their topic A Peek into the Past this week.
We had a great day starting our topic with our Sparkly Starter - you can see the activities we completed in our photos! This week we have started by thinking about how the Victorian era started.
The children were working really hard on their maths skills to help them complete their timelines about the Victorian era. We are so proud of the work they are producing!
We are so proud of all our year 6 pupils who have been working hard to complete their home learning, choosing from different activities from the home learning menu on Seesaw.
We are especially grateful to those who have baked one of the war time recipes - they have tasted delicious and the children have been so keen to share!
Thank you so much for supporting your children with this, it really does make a difference. We've also had some great writing and maths practice as well as home crafted World War II artefacts. Keep it up we are proud of you!
Exciting news! The Book Fair will be in school from the 28th of September - 2nd of October. It will take place in the KS2 Hall from 3:10-3:30pm. The fair is cashless so please bring a debit or credit card with you. Hope to see you there!

Pop in for a chat where you can meet other parents and feel a part of the community where lots of support will also be on offer. We look forward to seeing you there!
Members of the Gwent Eductaional Multilingual Service (GEMS) teaching team, who support children at Lliswerry every week, have been invited to the Senedd to celebrate the contribution, achievements, and impact of the Polish community across Wales.
This invitation was directly connected to the work carried out as GEMS taechers and support workers at Lliswerry Primary School last academic year which has been recognised highly.
We look forward to continuing this with more of our multilingual pupils this coming year!
It has been so exciting to hear from our Y6 learners following the visit to Lliswerry High School for their Open Evening this week. Lots of children shared exciting experiences they had during the evening in different areas of the High School and enjoyed meeting staff and children form other schools in the local area too.
A very well done to our two Year 6 winners from Lliswerry Primary School that were successful in winning prizes during the evening including a Signed Newport County shirt!
