The new MTH 1W course will provide lots of variety in the mathematics that will be learned. Much of the course content is similar to previous curriculum, but new content areas like coding, data and financial literacy have been added in.
The course has been divided up into 10 outcomes. More specific details about each outcome can be found here: Course Outcomes
While preparing these resources for the course, the writing team noticed how many of the expectations had a tendency to overlap. Rather than being seen as totally separate concepts, ideas from one strand often had significant connections with ideas from other strands.
For this reason, the writing team is recommending an approach to teaching the course that will loop through the curriculum in two passes.
The first pass, is designed to cover the fundamental skills in each strand.
The second pass, is intended to make connections between strands and extend the learning from the first pass.
The hope is that after completing the first pass through the curriculum, students will have a good understanding of the skills needed to recognize the connections between the different course concepts.
A suggestion for an order of teaching the concepts can be found here: MTH 1W Suggested Weekly Plan
This is not a day-by day plan, but we hope that it will help provide some guidance about what material could be covered each week in order to cover the curriculum in the course.
Based on this plan, Pass 1 would be completed after week 8 and Pass 2 would be completed after week 16. Ths should leave sufficient time at the end of the course for EQAO, course review and culminating activities.
Notice that students will be able to show demonstrate achievement between level 1 and level 3 on the first pass through the curriculum. Level 4 and Mastery can be reached during the second pass.
Sample Assessments have been provided for each outcome. These are intended as a guide to help understand the level of achievement of each student. Other assessments (and assessment methods) should also be used throughout the course.
This website is designed to support LKDSB teachers as they prepare for the new MTH 1W course which will be introduced in September 2021. The hope is that the resources here will help provide some direction and assistance in teaching the course.
This website will also be a work in progress, so as more resources are created they will be shared here.
Note: The Word documents that have been shared open better when you download them. You might notice some formatting errors if you open through Google Docs - downloading should fix that problem.

An Introduction to what Outcome Based Assessment is, and why it will be helpful in the new math course.
Part 2
A more detailed look at what Outcome Based Assessment could look like in the course. We will look at particular outcomes, how students progress through them, and what the assessments could look like.
Part 3
How do we actually record student progress in a Mark Program? What does it look like using ASPEN, spreadsheets or FreshGrade.
