Classroom Routines & Norms
-Take-Home Folder: this folder is the best way for home-to-school communication. This folder will travel back and forth each day. Please check it nightly and be sure it is returned to school.
-Students have several folders in their desks for specific subjects, these folders stay in school.
-Snack and a water bottle should be brought to school each day.
-School lunch and breakfast bags are available for students each day.
-Please pack layers of clothes (especially as the weather changes) to be left in backpacks.
-Sneakers should be worn on Fridays for P.E.
-A towel can be left at school for students to sit on when we are learning outdoors
-All students should leave an extra pair of headphones in school
Star Student of the Week:
About each week, a student is chosen at random to be the "Star Student of the Week"! This student is tasked with creating a poster at home all about themselves. This poster could include drawings, photographs, printed images, etc.. The goal is for the students to create this with minimal assistance, share what they would like about themselves (birthday, favorites, interests, hobbies, family members), and then orally present it to the class. In return, their classmates take notes on the Star Student, and write them an individualized letter. These letters are bound together in a keepsake book. Typically, Star Students are picked on Fridays, and they should bring in the poster by the following Friday. Depending on how long it takes to get posters in and letters written, this schedule could change! A copy of the directions can be found here.
Volunteering
Guest Speaking:
If you or your family are "masters" on a specific topic, have an experience you'd like to share, would like to teach us about your culture or traditions, or if you'd like to help bring outside experiences and knowledge into Room 202, please email me! I’m always looking for individuals to come in and share about how they use math, writing, reading and problem solving in their daily lives and/or occupations. Talks surely DON’T have to relate to our curriculum but some of our topics include….
Geography: Littleton (town planning, conservation, goods and services, maps)
Continents/oceans
Cultures around the world
Rocks/landforms
Engineering, testing product designs (compare and contrast, collecting data)
Service animals/ Technology for people with disabilities
Safety
Music/arts
Immigrations/ancestry
Economics (natural resources, industries, jobs in particular locations), fundraising, charities
Measurement, money, geometry
Community outreach
Mystery Readers:
Please see the signup for being a Mystery Reader here. When you sign up, please email me three clues about yourself. On the day you are scheduled to read, please bring a picture book of your choice to read to the class. If you are unable to find an age appropriate book, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will select a few for you to choose from when you arrive. When you arrive at SL, sign in at the office and wait for the office to call upstairs to the classroom. Please wait outside the door, as I read the clues to the class (including your child) and have them guess who our mystery reader is!
Please see SLS' Volunteer Guide here
Classroom Celebrations
Birthdays: Students' birthdays are celebrated in the classroom (regardless of the day/month)! Students are sung to, receive a card, bookmark, and bracelet, have a banner hung, and are able to choose from the "Birthday Menu". This includes choices such as picking flexible seating for the day, choosing the book for story time, getting extra time at recess, running the drill skill warmup, playing a game, etc..
NO food or gifts should be brought to school
Students/teachers are NOT able to pass out invitations
Celebrations: We have a four class celebrations that include outside food, volunteers, and contributions from families.
All food must be store bought with ingredients listed on packaging
A signup of items needed will be shared with you prior to the celebration, I kindly ask that you stick to this list
Volunteering for celebrations is limited, please email me if you are interested (or if the slots on the signup are full).
Please be aware that we have Classroom Ambassadors who I greatly appreciate! These individuals are great contacts when it comes to celebrations
