Enhancing Literacy in Northeast Tennessee

Gilbreath Literacy Council is a chapter of the Literacy Association of Tennessee (LAT) and the International Literacy Association (ILA).

Gilbreath Literacy Council serves the following counties of Northeast Tennessee: Carter, Greene, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington.

Official name

Our official council name is the Allie Lou Felton Gilbreath Reading Council. Allie Lou was a teacher and the wife of President Gilbreath who began East Tennessee State University (ETSU) as a teaching college in 1911.

Mission

The mission of the Gilbreath Literacy Council of the Literacy Association of Tennessee is to enhance literacy instruction in Northeast Tennessee. The Gilbreath Literacy Council works closely with the parent organizations, the Literacy Association of Tennessee (LAT), and the International Literacy Association (ILA).
