If you wish to study languages in Year 11 & 12, read below:
Navigating HSC subject selection can feel like a maze, so let's break down the rules for choosing a language at Xavier. The goal is to ensure that every student is in a course that matches their experience level and sets them up for success. You are welcome to pick 1 semester of French if you just want to experience learning a new language.
1. Which Course am I Eligible For?
Your choice between Beginners and Continuers depends entirely on how much of the language you’ve studied before
2. French Continuers
To ensure you have the vocabulary and grammar skills needed in the Year 11 and 12 Continuers course, we have designed a specific pathway at Xavier.
If you plan to take French Continuers, we strongly recommend the following sequence:
Year 9: Complete French Flavours 1.
Year 10: Complete French Flavours 2 and French Flavours 3.
By completing all three "Flavours" modules, this sequence covers the most essential grammar and thematic topics that form the foundation of the HSC Continuers syllabus, making the transition to senior study much smoother.
Note: If you are unsure about your eligibility based on previous study outside of Xavier, please speak with the Languages Department to confirm the best fit for you.
