STEAM Lab
STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math
We have integrated STEAM into our Science Lab for our students in grades 1-5. STEAM education is based on finding a solution to a real-world problem and emphasizes project-based learning. A few examples of STEAM projects that have been incorporated into our lab are Lego We Do robotics, Bio-domes and Wind Turbines.
Our goal is to develop the whole child – academically, socially, physically, creatively and morally through an enriched academic curriculum and high expectations. Students remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create to learn and reinforce skills.
Gifted and Talented Program
Students in grades 1st-5th who qualify for the gifted and talented program will receive services throughout the school year. Gifted and Talented students will have the opportunity to learn coding with Ozobots/Robotics as well as 3D printing programs, researching other cultures as well as topics that interest them, solve problems using different ideas/strategies/ideas, practice presenting their learning and their point of view, and to create unique products using Makerspace.
Goals for the gifted and talented program:
develop the skills needed to communicate effectively, relate, and participate actively with others in a positive fashion;
address specific subject matter through a compacted curriculum and utilize advanced content and process to produce original products;
demonstrate creative thinking and the desire to discover alternative solutions to problems;develop the skills, desires, and confidence to acquire knowledge independently
Fine Arts through Music with Mrs. Vermillion
In music class at Hudson PEP, students receive a musical foundation that can be enjoyed for life. Students learn about melody and rhythm. They also practice instruments, listen to many genres of music and work on movement skills. Students learn the connection between other academic subjects and music. They study different periods of music and their significant composers. They sing songs based on books and learn songs in foreign languages. They learn that rhythm is mathematical and study the meter, rhythmic values and the form of music. Additionally, students compose music throughout their elementary days.

Coding Lab
Hudson PEP students are learning an exciting new coding language! Students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Coding Lab will use Scratch to code their own interactive stories, animations, and games, and share those projects with others in their online community. Through this process, they will learn to think creatively; reason systematically; and work collaboratively— essential skills for everyone in today’s society. In addition, students in 2nd grade are using ScratchJr. to program their own interactive stories and animations. In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on the computer. Scratch and ScratchJr. were both developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the M.I.T. Media Lab.
Since Scratch’s launch in May 2007, millions of people all around the world have created and shared more than 46 million projects. In 2021, Hudson PEP and Longview ISD were chosen to participate in the second cohort of the Scratch Education Collaborative. The Scratch Education Collaborative (SEC) is a network of 150 organizations across the world focused on supporting learners from historically marginalized communities as they support their local communities with exploration and implementation of creative learning and Scratch. Be sure to ask your student about the projects they are creating in the Coding Lab! For more information:
