2024 UIL District 15-5A Champions + Region 2-5A 4th Place

The Longview ISD Computer Science Program was started in 2022 to all students the opportunity to receive a 4-year college-level computer science education starting as early as 8th grade. In the early courses, students will learn the basics of coding, algorithmic thinking, and an overview of possible computer science careers.  Students will design and code simple games, animations, and other real-world applications with a focus on problem-solving, creativity, and understanding the fundamentals of programming. As students progress, they will have opportunities to earn college credit through AP and IB courses and learn more about the advanced data structures and tools needed to become industry programmers or IT professionals. A goal of this program is for all students to graduate with at least two industry certifications - one in Java and the other in Python.

The computer science field is one of the fastest growing, highest paying, and most in-demand job markets in the world, and the career opportunities in computer science in Texas right now are incredible with ~150,000 open computer science jobs.  As an entry-level programmer, you can earn a starting salary of $60-80,000, growing easily to six figures after only a few years experience. Students not wanting to pursue Computer Science as a career will exit our program with a strong foundation for Engineering and the workforce as a whole, as well as the skills to make income through side projects in their free time.

Our introductory course, "Fundamentals of Computer Science", is offered to all students at LHS in person and to 8th graders at all three district middle schools online via Coursemojo. 8th grade students will be able to earn high school credit for participation in this elective. Navigate to the courses page for more information about the pathway or email department head Alex Main at amain@lisd.org with any questions.
