What is a Project Olympiad/Project Competition
Olympiads, sometimes called Project Competitions are international events for students, usually organized around a given theme or ideology. They bring students and teachers together from numerous countries and continents, for purposes of sharing knowledge, and are mostly based on practical or hands-on skills that offer an experiential extension of the learning that takes place in the classroom or school environment. The term “project” is derived from Project-Based Learning (PBL), a dynamic approach to learning in which students must actively participate in some form or analysis and research of real challenges by working for an extended period of time. Students working on a Project Competition may take weeks or even months to complete a project and, in most cases, extra hours must be committed to see the project through.
How does LGS get involved in Project Olympiads
We present Olympiads to our students and in various ways.
- We prepare and send our students to participate in Olympiads organized and hosted in other countries.
- We organize and host Olympiads in Kenya, which are attended by participants from other countries, thereby giving our students a direct chance to participate.
Our students have represented Kenya in various Project Olympiads since 1998, and won over 60 medals in Gold, Silver and Bronze among st other prestigious recognition's. In line with our core values At Light Academy, we emphasize on building a student all round. The success of our students is not only grounded on what they do in class, but also what they achieve outside the classroom.
Why Project Olympiads?
- Students learn and make practical application of what they learn in class, on an international platform.
- Students gain valuable experience and exposure which helps broaden their vision while giving them new perspectives into all areas of life.
- They get to see the world intellectually.
- They get to discover other cultures and get a chance to share their own. Most of these events organize unique cultural events to unite and celebrate the diversity of participants.
- By interacting with and seeing opportunities and challenges in other parts of the world, they become real global citizens with the capacity to discover and utilize new opportunities while also contributing to finding solutions to various global challenges.
- They travel to new places, meet and make new friends and of course have fun as a unique part of learning.
- Most of these competitions offer awards and incentives to students. They get certificates, medals, trophies, gadgets, monetary awards, and other significant recognition's.
- The certificates awarded in these competitions are crucial considerations when applying to various faculties in local and international universities. Because of such events, some of our students have been awarded higher education scholarships or above-the-bar considerations which they would otherwise not get.
