President's Message
Is it really May? I have to check my calendar just to make sure since it feels more like March. Probably by mid-summer, we’ll all be looking back fondly at the cooler temperatures we’re experiencing right now.
Possibly, some of you have been fascinated by the success, on Jeopardy, of Mattea Roach (native Haligonian) - 23 wins is quite an achievement! I admit that I love all sorts of trivia, so in honour of this young Canadian’s achievement, here is some varied trivia about the month of May - hope you have a bit of a chuckle over some of the weird days ‘celebrated’.
Is named for Maia, the Roman Goddess of growth
Flower: Hawthorne or Lily of the Valley
Birthstone: Emerald
Full Flower Moon - name of May’s full moon which is also the first super moon of the year
Victoria Day (aka May Long weekend) is a distinctly Canadian Holiday, Canada being the only country which commemorates Queen Victoria with an official holiday
Other days to ‘celebrate’:
May 2 - World Tuna Day
May 4 to 11 - Root Canal Awareness Week
May 8 - No Socks Day
May 14 - Dance Like a Chicken Day
May 28 - Slugs return from Capistrano Day
(Who on earth thinks up these ‘days’?)
Saving the best for last, May 2022 is the month LGQG returns to in-person meetings - Yay!!! The executive has been working diligently to get ready for the 24th. It’s been so long since we could be together that we’ve changed the format slightly to make it a fun evening. Make sure you check out Diane Lyons’ Program report for details, especially the start time of 6:30 so there is lots of time to socialize, borrow a book or browse at Carola’s pop-up shop.
Please remember that even though not required by the church, we are asking everyone to wear a mask out of consideration for the other members. Unfortunately Covid has not completely disappeared and we feel it is best to remain cautious. Also, please bring your own tea/coffee/water in a reusable container - we do not feel that we can safely serve the usual refreshments at this first meeting. Lastly, since several members have allergies and other sensitivities, we ask that the meeting be fragrance-free.
I’m so looking forward to really seeing all of you on the 24th. Bear with us as there may be bumps along the way and let us know if you have any suggestions or comments as we transition back to ‘normal’.
-Suzanne
Workshops
Fall 2022
In the upcoming weeks check the website for Fall workshop(s). The Workshops Coordinator hopes to have something for the Fall organized by the May 24 meeting.
Library News
The library will be OPEN at our May 24th Meeting!
If you want to avoid the rush, and have your books ready and waiting for you at the meeting, feel free to use this link:
https://www.librarycat.org/lib/lionsgatequilters
Search for a keyword, like “modern” or “Pre-Cuts” or “applique”, find a book and place a hold using your membership number (which is the same as your Patron ID) You’ll get a confirmation email, and I’ll have your books ready for you. You can, of course, browse at the meeting during our social time too and check out books while you are there.
I’m thrilled to report that we have very few outstanding books! If you happen to know any of these people, could you please ask them to make arrangements to return their LGQG library books? Thank you for your help.

If you haven't done so...Please take the library survey below.

Programmes
May 2022
Please join us for our first in-person programme in over 2 years!! We are very excited that Carola Russell from Carola’s Thread Company will be there for a presentation and shopping opportunity. Carola’s presentation will be “Scrap Happy and Fat Quarter Friendly,” and will include a bit of a trunk show for examples. The doors are opening early for the May meeting to allow you lots of time to shop and socialize. The shopping will be open from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and Carola will pack up while we do the business and show & tell part of the evening which will be followed by her presentation.
We hope to see you there!
Community Quilts
Our guild members continue to make beautiful quilts that are very appreciated by the groups on the North Shore that we support. (Groups are listed on our website).
We expect to have the use of the church hall for a few hours in early May when we plan to sort through a few of the donations that we have received over the last couple of years. We will see what there is and what projects will be available for people to work on.
Keep the quilts coming in! If you need batting or backing please let Brenda Sangster, Mona Morrison or Linda Heese know. We will do our best to get what you need.
Members-at-large
Does someone in the guild need to be lifted up, congratulated, thought of in a time of need? Please click on the image and submit the form so our Members-at-large can send a card on behalf of the guild.
Thank you,
Annilene and Sarah
Membership
114 STRONG!!!
Hello everyone!!
Remember to bring your membership card to the meetings. You need your number to sign in at the front desk, to take out books from the library and to sign up for COPS Days.
I will have name tags ready for NEW members but we are encouraging our new members and maybe even not-so-new members to take the time over the summer to make yourselves a personalized name tag.See examples below and you can check out others at the meeting and there is
always Pinterest and other sources of inspiration.
We are providing a “Buddy” system for new members, someone to show them around, explain the different stations/tables in the hall, introduce you to a few people and someone to sit with. This Buddy system is
open to anyone who is new-ish or feeling perhaps a bit isolated at a meeting. We want everyone to feel welcome and included and informed!
Please contact me if you would like to be paired up with a buddy.
