President's Message
Happy June! Happy Summer! and Happy Returning to Normal! (almost)
It was wonderful seeing so many of you (60 members and 5 guests ) at the May meeting, our first opportunity to be together in-person in over two years. In spite of wearing masks, I could ‘feel’ your smiles. As he was putting away the chairs after the meeting, I overheard Stephen, the church custodian, comment that he noticed such a positive atmosphere in the room - I couldn’t agree more! Many thanks to the executive members and other volunteers whose efforts made the meeting possible. I certainly enjoyed Carolla’s presentation and wasn’t it fun to shop?
Our June ‘Social’ meeting promises to be a lot of fun at Cates Park (weather permitting - when has it ever not been a hot day for the June meeting? ). Read all the details in the Programs report. Partly because of being outdoors, there won’t be a ‘business’ part of the meeting. We will still have Show and Tell so bring along any quilts you wish to show. And definitely remember to wear a hat - it’s not a garden party without a hat!
Since Covid is still lurking, we need to be aware of our personal situations and find a way to move forward within our own levels of comfort. That being said, there is much to which we can look forward to - the lazy days of summer, enjoying the outdoors, picnics and BBQ’s with friends and family and possibly travel to far off places. And don’t forget that there is an in-person COPS Day planned for July 23 in Lions Bay - check out the website for details.
With the guild having a 2 month break in the summer, I am looking forward to focusing on sandwiching and quilting some quilt tops ( There are more tucked away than I care to admit. In spite of 2 years of Covid, I haven’t made much progress in decreasing the number of my UFO’S.) Even if we experience severe heat as we did last summer, my basement sewing room stays cool so no excuse not to be productive! My goal is to get some finished to donate to Community Quilts - with so many refugees coming to Canada, the need is greater than ever. It brings me joy to think that a quilt might bring a degree of comfort to someone who has so little. I read this quote recently which resonated with me given the turmoil in the world right now: ‘Quilts connect us across time and space.’
I found these words in a book titled ‘Why We Quilt’, a compilation, by Thomas Knauer, of essays by contemporary quilters (including Krista Hennebury). I am looking forward to taking this book out of our library in the near future. With now being able to place a book on hold, the process is simple. I encourage all members to try out the system Carolann has put in place. We’ve all missed the library and now it is easier than ever to borrow books.
I hope to see many of you at the June meeting. But since this is the last newsletter before September, I want to wish everyone an enjoyable summer. Happy quilting and don’t forget those name tags we’re hoping to make before the Fall.

June 2022
It's hard to believe we're at the Summer social part of our guild meetings, but here we are. This year, weather permitting, we are planning something different. A party in the park! We hope all of you can make it. It would be lovely to see a huge turnout. Should the weather turn against us, we do have the church hall reserved but we will confirm to you the day of the event where the location will be.
Details are as follows:
Date: June 28th, 2022
Time: 6:00pm - Dusk
Location: Cates Park (unless we notify you otherwise)
What we need from you: Please eat before you come. There will be food, but similar to our usual in-person guild meetings, it will be light refreshments. Please also bring your own chair, mug, and a hat. The hat can be fancy or quirky or just your gardening hat. Please also wear your name tags.
We invite you to bring items for show & tell. We plan to have a few step ladders, etc to help display them afterward.
One last item - please carpool if possible because parking could be limited at the park.
COPS
At time of publication no details regarding summer Cops were submitted.
Please check website HERE for the most recent updates regarding COPS days, details and registration.
Community Quilts
This has been a busy year so far with lots of quilts coming in and being given out to our North Shore organizations. Also, we are just in the process of selecting over 20 quilts for the request we received for quilts for refugees being sponsored by some North Shore people..
Please keep working on your quilts for the community - they are so appreciated!
(The lap quilts - about 50" x 60" are the most useful.)
In fall there will be some kits available for quilting - various sized quilt tops that have been donated over the last couple of years. We are organizing backings and battings so they will be ready to quilt and complete.
If you need backings please email Brenda Sangster.
If you need batting or have any questions or finished quilts to pick up please email Linda Heese or Mona Morrison

Quilting Question
Do you have a favorite longarm quilter you send your quilts to for quilting?
If so, the guild would like to put a list of long arm quilters on the website to assist members.
Please email Shauna Dennert at s.dennert@lionsgatequiltersguild.com with the name, contact information and location of your long armer, and if your long arm person uses pantographs, free motion or both.
CQA 2022 - WOW!
Kudos to all members who volunteered at the show. The friendly Lions Gate Quilters were hard to miss. Thank you from all of us.
Congrats to all who had a quilt or two in the show.

Tips aNd Free Patterns to Try
1) Place an old pillow case over the ironing board to protect the cover when using fusible webbing.
2) To make removing paper from paper foundation piecework easier, dip a cotton swab in water and "paint"
the stitching lines. Wait a few seconds and pull the paper away!
3) Place a small tabletop ironing board across the arms of your easy chair to make a comfortable workspace
for hand stitching.
