President's Message

Here it is February 2022 already! The shortest month but lots of things are happening. Valentine’s Day - apart from being a celebration of love, is a great time to enjoy chocolate ( do we really need an excuse?); Family Day - almost back to normal this year; and last but not least, our AGM. This marks the beginning of our guild’s year and hopefully returning to a ‘normal’ time when we can finally meet in-person. (The membership renewal form is on the website.) After all the time we’ve met on Zoom over the past 2 years it will seem strange but wonderful. I know we can hardly wait but I appreciate all your support and patience in navigating the pandemic.
We are all so weary of Covid and the restrictions but all the protest and anger rising up across the country only seem to be adding to our collective anxiety. My hope is that some middle ground can soon be found and we can return to a degree of civility within our country.
We all need more joy in our lives during these troubled times. I hope the guild has been able to help all of you a bit in this regard. With Zoom we’ve tried our best to connect with many of you. We’ve had great speakers at our meetings, some from far away, inspiring workshops, COPS and Sew-cial days providing time to visit, share and sometimes even sew a little bit. The upcoming Extravaganza (March 26) will be lots of fun - make sure you register.
I am so grateful to have been part of this wonderful community of quilters and sewers especially over the last two years. My sewing room is definitely my ‘happy place’ and I rarely feel bored but being able to get to know more of you and also keep in touch with old friends has certainly brought me much joy.
I look forward to welcoming and working with our new executive members as we move forward to getting back to some form of normal. There will be challenges ahead but it looks to be an exciting year for the guild.
I hope that you will all try to attend the AGM (on Zoom) on February 22. In addition to the normal business of adopting the financial statements and the elections of new executive members, the program committee has a great speaker planned - not to be missed!
Happy Stitching and see you on the 22nd!
Suzanne

Programmes

Our presenter this month is Cheryl Arkison, pattern designer, educato and author (of ‘Sunday Morning Quilts’, and ‘A Month of Sundays’). She visited us last year and this month will present another program which I hope will resonate with you as it does for me in this strange COVID time we are living through. It is called ‘Make Time for Play’ and talks about putting the fun back into our quilting instead of always focusing on perfect points and fabulous quilting.

From the Library -

It has been the oddest time to be the Guild librarian – I was so looking forward to meeting everyone each month in person but obviously it was not meant to be in covid times! Since we still can’t meet in person for a few more months, please do keep hold of the books you still have checked out of the library. Once we can see each other again, the Executive will sort out gathering them all back in. And in the meantime, you can look forward to the new books that have been added to the library at the start of 2022!

Perfect for beginners, this quilting book features simple illustrations and easy-to-follow steps that teach you how to make up to 30 beautiful quilts in a short amount of time!

Big, bold, impressive designs that sew together quickly and easily!

From concept to completion-the modern quilter's design guide Create a quilt that is uniquely yours! Award-winning quilter Heather Black demystifies the design process with easy-to-understand tips and basic quilt math for modern makers.

This book brings a fresh eye to classic patchwork patterns in a way that is delighting quilters all around the world today.

Staying on for another term...

January -2022 - Threadplay Pouch Workshop by Krista Hennebury @poppyprint was amazing. Thank you Krista and Shauna for making it happen.

From Krista

I am currently enrolled in Maiwa’s Journey to Indigo online workshop. I’ve wanted to try dyeing fabric with indigo for a long time, but have been intimidated by the chemistry, supplies and maintenance. I didn’t realize until I started the course that there are many FREE courses on the Maiwa Teachable website HERE. You can learn how to properly scour fabric and wool to prepare it for dyeing, how to keep a dyers journal, even how to prepare a banana indigo vat. Check out the many incredible resources offered by Maiwa! Even if you have no intention of dyeing your own fabric, the videos are lovely to watch and the results definitely inspiring.

If you're planning a visit to Osoyoos, Leslie would love a visit.
