We look forward to seeing you
Sew-cial and Guild meeting host: Shauna Dennert
Here it is well past the middle of the month and, for many of us, our gardens are calling out for attention. Just as we begin to enjoy a few days of glorious sunshine, along come the proverbial April showers together with thunderstorms, hail, morning frost and even the dreaded ‘s’ word. It’s almost as if Mother Nature is echoing the turmoil felt around the world.
For the guild, April means we are one month closer to returning to in-person meetings. I know we are all so looking forward to really ‘seeing’ each other in May and not just on a computer screen. I think you will all enjoy the program that is planned. With all the news about new variants and being in the sixth wave, we want to move forward as carefully and cautiously as possible. In consideration for the well-being of all the members, masks will be required. We won’t be serving refreshments since we don’t feel this can be done safely and encourage all of you to bring your own reusable cup filled with tea, coffee or water as you wish. We will have more details in next month’s newsletter so watch for that. Carolann, our librarian, is diligently working toward having all books returned before the May meeting so all will be available for circulation at that time - yay! If there are any questions or concerns any of you might have regarding any aspect of moving forward, please feel free to reach out to any executive member.
I would like to share with you a little anecdote that relates to the up-coming program for the April guild meeting. Patricia Belyea of Okan Arts will be talking about aspects of Japanese fibre arts and the Tokyo quilt show. For me, it will be of particular interest. Together with three other lovely quilters (Bena, Wendy and Catherin), I was fortunate enough to travel to Japan in January 2020. The trip was a once in a lifetime event for me and I even celebrated my 70th birthday in Osaka. I know I often sound like a broken record by frequently mentioning how much the guild has enriched my life but it was by participating in guild activities that I met Bena and we became good friends. It was her suggestion that going to the Tokyo Quilt Show might be a fun adventure and was it ever! It is truly because of the guild that I had this wonderful trip with so many memories (and we got home safely just before the world locked down).
Finally, I wish all of you a lovely long weekend. Happy quilting and ‘see’ you on the 26th.
-Suzanne

2 formats, one alphabetically by last name and one alphabetically by first name.
I am looking forward to giving out door prizes at our May meeting. Long overdue!
All members who have library books checked out should have received an email with the title of the book and drop off instructions. If you missed it, and know you have a book out, please drop it off at one of these locations:
St. Andrew's & St. Stephen's Church, 2641 Chesterfield Ave on May 3, 2022 between noon and 3pm
in the box on my porch at 2520 Hyannis Drive any time before May 3, 2022

New books are on the way to put in our library for this month. Hopefully they will arrive in time for our May 24, 2022 in person meeting!
Quilt by Doree Piercy
Our guild members continue to make beautiful quilts that are very appreciated by the groups on the North Shore that we support. (Groups are listed on our website). Last week we received a nice thank you note from Cedarview Lodge (shown here) after our recent quilt delivery. The feedback is much appreciated.
We expect to have the use of the church hall for a few hours in early May when we plan to sort through a few of the donations that we have received over the last couple of years. We will see what there is and what projects will be available for people to work on.
Keep the quilts coming in! If you need batting or backing please let Brenda Sangster, Mona Morrison or Linda Heese know. We will do our best to get what you need.
We've weathered 2 long years of COVID restrictions and now the moment is nigh! I have provisionally booked the village hall in Lions Bay for an IN PERSON Summer COPS Day on July 16th or 23rd! The day will start at 9am and end at 5-ish. We even hope to resume our traditional potluck lunch (PHO permitting), but if you prefer to bring your own lunch, please do.
As this is our first IN PERSON gathering (woohoo!) since COVID began, priority will be given to guild members. The cost as always will be $15 and payment will likely be required in advance. We need 15 sign-ups to make the day a go. All the necessary info will be sent to those who register around the beginning of July.
PLEASE NOTE: We will follow whatever COVID protocols have been put in place by the guild executive at that time (as well as PHO). If Public Health Orders change, we may have to reconsider or rethink how we arrange the day.
When you sign up, please select one date if you are only available on one day or "BOTH" if you are available on either. The date that suits the most people will be selected! Please register ASAP so we can finalise the date, tnx!
Upcoming ZOOM COPS Days: May 7th and June 18th, NOON to 4-ish (details here)
LGQG Quilt Show 2023 - Help Wanted
The Quilt Show Committee is still looking for a volunteer to coordinate the set up and take down for the quilt show. You don't have to be comfortable climbing up on ladders, but if you love doing puzzles, creating maps, or you just love seeing a big, empty space turn into something special, this could be the job for you. This is an essential position, and we have at least two experienced set up/take down coordinators who have offered to provide guidance and assistance, as well as a host of volunteers to help with the physical set up and take down. Set up will take place on the Thursday just before the show, and take down will begin as soon as the show closes and the space is cleared. So you'll be free to enjoy the show without working through it. If you're interested or have questions, please contact Colleen Bell, Quilt Show Coordinator
We are also looking for a Raffle Quilt Coordinator. EASY EASY...The quilt is already made. The need is for organizing ticket sales.

Looking for smaller pieces of batting. Keeping it out of the landfill!
Do you have a bag of random left over batting, thinking you might eventually make a bunch of placemats, but never do? The quilt as you go technique is a great way to use up batting that is too small for a quilt. I have burned through my stash and am looking for more batting (minimum 10 inch scraps preferably, but some smaller pieces are good too). These are going to Community Quilts
Contact Karen Munro (see Member Directory for contact info) or email kamunro@shaw.ca if you have batting to donate or if you would like to talk about this approach to quilt making. It is helping my machine quilting skills.
Lions Gate Pinterest-ISH page is HERE. A new page has been added to our website to encourage members to try ideas that fellow members have tried and recommend. Please continue to send articles, sewing/quilting tips etc. to be included in the newsletter or on the website.
TIPS from Myra
Don't neglect the wheels of your sewing chair/stool. This one looks like it ran over a mouse.
Use a pipe cleaner to keep spool and matching bobbin together.
