This undergraduate course focuses on the intersections of mental health and substance use disorders in the criminal justice system. This course is designed to be taught online with one synchronous remote class session per week over a 10 week term. Course topics include the treatment history of mental disorders, relevant federal legislation and court decisions, the competence requirement and insanity defense, law enforcement training, community services, and careers and professional wellness. This course weighs heavily on writing assignments. It is recommended that students complete Writing 121 prior to taking this course, however it is not required.Ā
Included in this course pack are weekly overviews and activities as well as major assignments and rubrics. The course readings include an open textbook for each topic.
