Vocabulary

TWISTER

Have a partner 1 draw a card and say the vocabulary word.

Then partner 2 will give a definition of the vocabulary word.

If they say the definition correctly Partner 2 get to spin the spinner and choose the color that goes with what they spun. If Partner 2 say the definition incorrectly then they have to use the color of the dot that’s on the vocabulary card with what is spun.

SPOONS

1. Prepare a deck of cards. There should be 21 vocabulary words, and 21 corresponding pictures.

2. Form groups of 3-6 players. Give each group one deck of cards and some spoons–one less than the number of people in the group.

3. Spread the spoons out evenly in the middle of the circle of players. The dealer shuffles the cards and deals 4 to each player. The object is to get 2 pairs: picture/word, picture/word. Remaining cards are placed face down in a pile by the dealer.

4. To begin the game, the dealer draws a card from the top of the pile, looks at it, and either swaps it with one of the cards in his hand or places it face down for the next player to pick up. The card (or its “swap”) travels around the circle. The last player places it face down in a discard pile.

5. The moment the dealer discards one card, he picks up another one, so that several cards are in play at the same time. This is a fast moving game! When the dealer runs out of cards in the original pile, he begins to draw cards from the discard pile.

6. As soon as someone has two picture-word pairs, he picks up a spoon. This can be a quick grab or a sneaky, subtle move. When the other players realize that a spoon is missing, they must try to get a spoon, too. One player will be left without a spoon.

Guess Who

This can be played with teams of two, or one against the other.

Materials: Two different sets of cards (make sure your name is on the back)

Group/person 1 lays out all their cards upright so they can see them.

Group/person 2 lays out all their cards upright so they can see them.

Each group secretly picks one card as their “it” card

Then take turns back and forth asking yes or no questions to figure out what the “it” card is.

When you ask a question and it eliminates a vocab word - flip it over.

Go Fish - Video coming soon

Five cards are dealt to each player

All remaining cards are placed face down in a pile.

First, choose a player to go first.

On each person's turn, ask any player for a specific vocab word or picture. For example: "Sarah, do you have the picture for static friction?" or "Mark, do you have the vocab word inertia?" You should hold the card that matches the one you are looking for.

If the player you ask has the card, she must give it to you. In the example, Sarah would have to give you the picture for static friction, or Mark would have to give the vocab word for inertia.

If you get a cards from the player you ask, you get another turn.

If the person you ask does not have the card, they say, "Go fish."

You then draw the top card from the draw pile. If you happen to draw a card you're looking for, show it to the other players and your turn continues. Otherwise, it is the next player's turn. You add the drawn card to your hand.

When you collect a picture and vocab word that go together, immediately show the set to the other players and place the two cards face down in front of yourself. That is a "match".

Go Fish continues until either someone has no cards left in their hand or the draw pile runs out.

The winner is the player who then has the most matches (sets of two).

Headbanz - Video Coming Soon

How to play:

  • The first player to get rid of all of his or her chips wins!

Set Up

Each player takes a headband and puts it on his or her head.

Deal out one card, facedown, to each participant.

Players then place each card into the pocket in the headband. Be sure not to look at it as you put it in the headband! All other players must be able to see the word YOU WILL ONLY USE THE WORDS FOR THIS GAME.

Play

Pick one person to go first (if you can't decide the youngest player will go first) then the next player is to the left.

TWO WAYS TO PLAY:

VERSON 1:

Player 1 will look at the card on one other players head and either give hints or read the definition. Then the other player may guess what the word is, if they guess correct they get to keep the word. This process continues so that all players get an opportunity to guess their word.

VERSON 2:

  • Player 1 asks questions about their word while a timer is running (Put a timer of 1 minute on your computer). When the timer is up they are allowed to ask "Am I a...?" Players may not ask "What am I?"If you guess the picture before the timer runs out, simply take another card and put it behind your headband. Continue to ask questions until the timer runs out. Keep each vocabulary word.
  • Then player 2 would continue with the same procedure as above.

The player with the most vocab cards at the end wins.

Players are always free to give up guessing at any point during their turn. But if that player does give up, they must put the vocab card back in the pile.
