Feeding a brand new baby squirrel is challenging. Everything is foreign, from the environment, to the syringe, and the taste and temperature of the formula. It takes some encouragement for them to start feeding. Be patient, go slow, and try to match their sucking rhythm.

Baby squirrels may feel more comfortable feeding with the front half of their body propped up on a rolled up towel. This baby squirrel is just starting to get the hang of feeding from a syringe.

A squirrel who is accustomed to feeding will have a rhythm to its feeding you can watch for and match with your syringe. This can be especially seen at 0:43 min.

If a baby squirrel gets milk up its nose, it's very important to intervene right away. It's important to prevent aspiration pneumonia.

Volunteers new to squirrel feeding should ALWAYS use a 1 cc syringe. Starting with a 3 cc syringe before you know how to control one could easily lead to aspiration.
