aperture

pt.1

in the setting I've used for these photos, the lighting happened to be gorgeous as it was the 'golden' hour, I've paired it with a fast shutter speed and low ISO for a darker exposure, leaning into the golden effect.

Aperture:

what is it? what does it affect in our photos?

Aperture refers to the opening in the lens of a camera that allows light to enter. It is measured in f-stops, which indicate the size of the aperture. A larger aperture, indicated by a smaller f-stop number, allows more light to enter, while a smaller aperture, indicated by a larger f-stop number, lets in less light. Aperture has a significant effect on the depth of field in a photo, which refers to the range of distance that is in focus. A larger aperture creates a shallow depth of field, which blurs the background and emphasises the subject, while a smaller aperture creates a deeper depth of field, which keeps more of the image in focus. Understanding the aperture is essential for creating photos with the desired depth of field and lighting.

I've chosen to display the above photos as it they have an active display of how aperture affects the depth of field when taking photos. by maintaining the same scene and setup I can excessively change the point of focus in an image. The reason I've placed the two photos side-by-side is to really show how the point of focus and depth of field can drastically change an image.  I've manually focused my camera to a certain point to create the desired effect for my aperture photos.

the photos I've taken of toy cars were my first attempts at capturing and working with Depth of field. As you can see, I've really had drastic changes in the style of each photo and even with the settings being changed so clearly affecting each image differently.

I have chosen to place my "car photography" side-by-side to hopefully give you a better understanding of how aperture can be displayed as many techniques and can create a huge variety of settings.

Look away

The setting of the photo: to create the desired effect I've designed a miniature scene using a torn open coffee pod, simple black background and miniature people dolls.

For this photo, I'm hoping to create a wondering effect, for each audience member to develop and form their own opinion or story linked to this photo.

The crumble

The setting of the photo: for this photo, I'm really trying to combine the everyday views of people with an imaginative spin. having set up a figurine climbing up a "hill" I'm hoping to have created a not-so-out-of-the-ordinary scene. though, when looking longer we notice the "hill" is a chocolate bar!

this photo was really fun to set up and experiment with different light settings, balancing the focus point on the foreground rather than the back of the chocolate bar, plus a bonus- delicious cleanup!

the drop

i love The drop photograph, as it shows an example of just how extensive the work of aperture, ISO and shutter speed combined can create.
