At Cypress Springs, we strive for Wildcat Wellness. We recognize that wellness includes not only our physical health but our mental health as well. To meet the mental health needs of our students, individual and group counseling are available for a wide range of concerns. In addition to counseling services, social and emotional learning is integrated into the Cypress Springs curriculum in a variety of ways (including classroom guidance lessons). It is our belief that taking care of our minds sets the stage for both successful learning and successful living.
School counselors are a vital part of a school's overall educational team. They provide both direct services (such as direct instruction in the counseling curriculum, appraisal and assessment, and counseling) and indirect services (such as consultation, collaboration, and referrals) to support students in achieving success in all domains of their lives. The elementary school years are a critical time in child development. School counselors provide support to children as they navigate their home, school, and social lives during this critical time. In essence, school counselors help children gain the necessary knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to be successful students and, eventually, successful citizens. We all have bad moments and bad days where we would benefit from just sitting down with someone to talk through what's bothering us. Some students may require more than just an impromptu session on a bad day, however. School counseling is typically briefer in nature than traditional therapy. It is usually both strength-based and solution-focused. Students are usually seen for an average of 5 sessions (depending on their individual needs). More intensive services usually warrant an outside referral. School counseling at Cypress Springs follows this general model.
Common issues addressed in school counseling include:
Anxiety
Stress
Anger
Social Skills
Self-Esteem
Self-Confidence
Grief
Adjustment
If your child is experiencing concerns beyond the scope of school-based counseling, we coordinate with many community agencies and can make an appropriate referral to ensure your child gets the care they need.
As we navigate these uncertain times, we want to make sure our students have access to our school counseling program whether they are participating in traditional in-person learning or our virtual school program. For this reason, we are currently working to be able to soon provide telehealth services for our students. It is important to note that Lincoln Parish Schools believe in the importance of synchronous communication with regard to telehealth services (e.g. video-conferencing and, to a lesser extent, phone calls) rather than asynchronous communication methods for providing services (e.g. emails and text messages).
