Computers, tablets, and other technology have the power to transform teaching and learning. When students have access to a technology device in the classroom, they have more opportunities to write, communicate, and develop critical 21st century collaboration, critical thinking, and technology skills.
Since 2011, students and teachers at Hanscom Middle School in grades 5-8 have participated in an authentic 1:1 technology environment. By learning how to use technology as a tool, not a toy, in a safe, supported environment, students develop essential digital literacy skills, including online safety and how to protect their digital footprint. This year, each sixth grade student will be assigned a new iPad tablet that they will use throughout their time at HMS.
We encourage students and parents/guardians to review the district’s Student Use of Information and Communications (ICT) Policy at https://goo.gl/zdTmPe.
We also ask that students prepare for the responsible use qualification test by reviewing the online presentation at:
In addition, we also recommend the parents/guardians to review the list of third-party software services and web-based applications that our HMS teachers use. In order for the students to use the third-party services and participate in the 1:1 program, parents/guardians must sign and return the Student Use of Third-Party Software form below.
Student Use of Third-Party Services Form 2109-2020
Both students and parents will be asked to sign the agreement below after they have read the ICT and watched the HMS 1:1 Technology presentation together and prior to the student receiving the iPad.
1. Is there a fee for the program? We are committed to providing all students the opportunity to participate in the program and the tablet, charger and case are provided to all students at the district’s cost. Failure to return the equipment will result in a charge of $300 to replace the tablet, $40 to replace a power adapter, and $100 to replace the case.
2. Can a student use a different case? Students are required to use the provided case at all times. In addition to providing protection for the iPad, it has a detachable keyboard to make typing from the iPad easier.
3. Will the school replace damaged devices? The school will repair or replace equipment damaged by accident or from normal wear or tear. Students must utilize the provided case at all times to prevent damage. Parents will be required to repair or replace (at the discretion of the school district) equipment that is lost, stolen or intentionally damaged.
4. Is the internet filtered on the tablets? All network activity on the tablets is filtered for inappropriate content both on-campus and off-campus. In addition, all internet access is disabled nightly from 10pm-5am. More importantly, we work with all students to help them develop essential life skills to make responsible and safe choices about how they use the internet and online resources.
We encourage families to decide what limits work for them in addition to the school parameters and implement them at home. For example, many families do not allow tablets or other electronic devices in a child's room. Adding your families expectations helps students learn responsible digital citizenship.
