The HAIR Apprenticeship Program (HAP) is a dynamic, two year, hands-on learning pathway designed for students interested in pursuing a career in hairstyling, salon management, and the beauty industry. This program provides a unique blend of classroom instruction and practical, real-world experience in professional salons, allowing students to gain a head start in their careers while completing their high school education.
Program Overview:
The HAIR Apprenticeship Program is structured around a 16-credit bundle that integrates the Ontario curriculum with specialized courses and certifications aligned with the hairstyling profession. Students will work toward both their high school diploma (OSSD) and professional 1500-hour hairstylist certification, all while developing the skills and experience necessary to excel in the beauty industry.
Key Components:
Specialized High Skills Major (SHSM) Students will complete a selection of SHSM certificates and training that focus on hairstyling, aesthetics, health and safety and related fields. These courses cover essential knowledge in hair care, chemical treatments, salon management, and the latest industry trends.
Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)
OYAP is an excellent opportunity for high school students interested in pursuing a career in the skilled trades. By allowing students to begin apprenticeship training while still in school, the program provides them with a fast-tracked pathway to certification, valuable work experience, and a clear understanding of the skilled trades career options available to them. It’s a highly beneficial program for those passionate about hands-on learning and skilled professions.
Dual Credit Courses: Students will take dual credit courses, allowing them to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously. These courses are delivered in partnership with St Lawrence College and cover natural protective services techniques, salon operations, and makeup application techniques.
Cooperative Education Placements: The program includes co-op placements in real-world salon environments where students gain hands-on experience working with professional stylists. These placements allow students to apply classroom knowledge to real situations, developing their technical skills and understanding of client management.
Certifications and Industry Training: Throughout the program, students will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications, such as:
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
First Aid and CPR
Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)
Hair styling-specific certifications like chemical treatments, braiding, and hair extensions
Technical Skills Development: The program focuses on the following core hairstyling skills:
Haircutting and styling
Hair coloring, highlights, and lowlights
Perming, straightening, and other chemical treatments
Updos and special occasion styling
Scalp care, hair analysis, and product knowledge
Business and Entrepreneurial Training: In addition to hairstyling skills, students will be introduced to the business side of the beauty industry. This includes salon management, marketing, customer service, product sales, and how to run a successful salon or freelance business.
