ADVANCED CHEMISTRY

Students completing this course will develop an in-depth understanding of chemical bonding theories and the relationship between elements and compounds.  They will learn to balance chemical reactions and solve stoichiometry problems relating mass, volume, and energy relationships in chemical reactions.  Students will use the kinetic-molecular theory to explain the properties of and relationships between solids, liquids, and gases.  Students will also be introduced to concepts including atomic theory, atomic structure, and the relationship of atoms and elements to the periodic table.  Emphasis is placed on critical thinking skills and demonstrating application abilities on a more analytical level.

AP CHEMISTRY

This course is designed to strengthen student’s knowledge of those topics covered in their first year of chemistry and to emphasize topics students need in order to take the AP Chemistry Test.  This course will provide a solid foundation in chemistry for students who plan to major in healthcare, engineering, or other science-related fields in college.  Course topics will include a review and reinforcement of topics covered in Advanced Chemistry as well as a concentration in thermodynamics, entropy and enthalpy; equilibrium constants; acid-base buffers and titrations; electrochemistry and oxidation-reduction reactions; and chemical kinetics.  This curriculum is lab intensive, therefore extended laboratory periods may be needed to complete the required lab assignments throughout the year.
