Message from the Head of Secondary

Dear Parents, Students and Caregivers,

I take great joy that we put much emphasis on personal relationships at Lighthouse.  Humans, at our very heart, were meant to function in community.  As many have noted, when things are going well, our natural inclination is to celebrate and rejoice with others.  We run home to share the good news!  What is perhaps less intuitive is when things are not going well.  Do we still share our burdens with others and recognise the power of community?  Do we run home to remark how miserable we are feeling?  In our social media age, I take note how quickly we are to glamorize and aggrandise our successes to others, while we rarely express our vulnerability and failings in that same space.

Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, “All life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied together into a single garment of destiny.  Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality . . . We aren’t going to have peace on Earth until we recognize the basic fact of the interrelated structure of all reality.”

As we work together as a community, I want to encourage us to share openly and honestly about our successes as well as our failures and anxieties.  I am grateful that we are building a community that can celebrate together, but that can also grieve together and be resilient together.  It is often in our weakness, and particularly with the support of an encouraging community, that we can be made strong.

Sincerely,

Zach Mulert
