Message from the Head of Secondary
Dear Parents, Students and Caregivers,
Thank you to all those parents and community members who attended our first “Parent Connect” meeting this morning. I am grateful to continually create more connections between our parents and school, so I hope you might consider some of the ways that you may like to volunteer. If you are interested in becoming involved in any of these capacities, please email our Campus Secretary, Mr. Frederick Francois at frederick.francois@lighthouse.edu.mu and he will be in touch.
It was wonderful to have a full week of school and to start establishing some of our norms for learning. It was also special to bring together our student house leaders on Monday for a leadership retreat and to finally carry out our long-awaited Grade 7 Retreat/Outdoor Activity Day to help our newest secondary learners transition well. If you haven’t already been following our Facebook page, we’ll do our best to share more exciting news and lenses into life at Lighthouse.
Sincerely,
Zach Mulert
Head of Secondary
Weekly Secondary News
Chromebook Update for Grade 7 Students and Parents
We regret that we are still waiting for an estimated arrival date for the Chromebooks ordered for all of our Grade 7 students. The supplier indicated that sea freight has been arranged but that the factory has still failed to confirm a firm delivery date. We will continue to teach without devices in Grade 7 and hope to soon receive good news about the arrival or our ordered materials.
Upcoming Outdoor Activity Days
A reminder that we have a few outdoor activity days coming up:
Grade 8 Green - Tuesday, 13 February
Grade 8 Yellow - Thursday, 15 February
Grade 9 Green - Tuesday, 20 February
Grade 9 Yellow - Thursday, 22 February
Instead of regularly scheduled classes, students are asked to be in their PE uniforms, bring proper sun screen, mosquito repellent, and plenty of water to drink.
Tech Parent Interactive
Join us for an informative session aimed at Secondary School parents on 20 February at 18:00 (at the Pavilion), where we delve into our exciting Chromebook and digital literacy rollout! Discover our comprehensive plan to implement digital citizenship and coding into our curriculum at the lower secondary. Get involved and stay informed as we equip our students with essential skills for the future. Don't miss out on shaping the digital journey of our school community!
Rite Journey Departure
Each year our Grade 9s participate in the Rite Journey course. This unique wellbeing programme is designed to challenge our young people to resilience and support the development of self-aware, responsible and respectful adults. In two weeks (Friday, 23 February), we are having our Departure ceremony, which involves an evening celebration of childhood, an overnight sleepover at the school, and an early morning sunrise at Anse La Raie beach as the students contemplate their Journey to adulthood.
Grade 9 parents, please check your email this afternoon for more information. For anyone who would like to see more information about this programme, click here.
April Date Changes
Please note that the Grade 12/13 Camp has been changed to the last week of the term (22 - 26 April) due to site availability. Accordingly, our “Rain Day Week” in which we may run different schedules during the week (e.g. run a Monday schedule on a Wednesday to help balance the number of days impacted by inclement weather) will also now take place during the last week of the term (22-26 April).
Save the Date
A reminder that there will be no classes taught on Friday, 1 March. Instead, this day will be reserved for parents-student-teacher conferences from 7:30 - 18:00.
Dengue Fever Reminder
Due to the increased cases of Dengue fever, students will temporarily refrain from participating in Farm Lab and Forest School activities.
Please apply mosquito repellent to your children in the mornings and consider sending some to school for reapplication. Remember our fever-free policy: students with temperatures of 37.7 °C or higher should stay home until their fever subsides without medication.
