Message from the Head of Secondary

Dear Parents, Students and Caregivers,

Humans, on the whole, are creatures of routine.   We love to plan.  We love to create habits and norms.  We love to know what to expect.   The cancellation of school this week definitely threw a wrench into our routine and I want to thank everyone: students, parents, and caregivers alike, for adjusting to the school cancellations.   Students: thanks for embracing online learning, much as we would prefer to see you face-to-face.   Parents: thank you for adjusting your schedules or caregiving plans to make sure everyone was safe.   Lighthouse community: let’s continue to pray for our nation and for this school year.  Let us not lose hope.

Sincerely,

Zach Mulert

Head of Secondary

Volunteers Needed for Cyclone Relief

Please join us for a clean-up work day in Tranquebar (Port Louis) to support our neighbours affected by Cyclone Belal!

Tomorrow, Saturday, 27th January, 2024, from 8:45am - 3:15pm

Lighthouse is looking for a few volunteers aged 14 and up  to lend a helping hand to this community where at least 15 homes have been severely impacted.  If you are interested in helping, please send a WhatsApp message to 59848914. Those interested will gather at the Champs de Mars.

Let's come together as a community to lend a helping hand and bring smiles back to our neighbours' faces.

IGCSE Results

23 Lighthouse students sat for their IGCSE examinations in October and November 2023.  We are pleased to announce that 70% of our students achieved at least 5 grades between A* and C.  Those 23 students sat for 168 exams and 63% of these entries earned marks between an A* and C.

Add/Drop Deadline for Upper Secondary Students

For any Grade 10 or 11 students who would like to consider dropping or changing subjects, after discussing this desire with their parents, parents are encouraged to use this link for any requests. Students should have a discussion with their subject teachers before requesting a subject change or drop.  The deadline for requests is February 1st and all changes will be made by Friday, February 9thGrade 13 students: please note that we ask to wait until AS-level results are released on February 7th before requesting any change.

Grade 7 Retreat Update

The Grade 7 Retreat originally scheduled for January 24th is now going to be encompassed in the Outdoor Activity Days scheduled for February 6th (7 Green) and February 8th (7 Yellow).

Back to School Night

All Lighthouse Parents (and particularly those new to Lighthouse) are invited to come to our Back To School Night this coming Wednesday, January 31st in the Pavilion.  At this informational session, we will share the Lighthouse Philosophy of Education, Mission and Values, along with details of some of this year’s goals and changes.  If you have any questions or topics that you would like to be addressed at this meeting, please contact zach.mulert@lighthouse.edu.mu with your input and queries. We want to make sure we work well together towards our common goals!

Changes to Homeroom/Assembly

Veteran Lighthouse students will notice that we’ve adjusted our Homeroom/Assembly Schedule for this year.   Our goals are multi-faceted, but we want to strengthen the relationship between the Homeroom Teacher and students, improve our House System, make sure our assemblies reflect our School Culture, and continually to spiritually develop students as well.   On Mondays, students will be with their homeroom teachers.  On Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursday, there will be a short “chapel” assembly for all secondary students.  On Fridays, there will be House Meetings, All-School Assemblies, or extended homerooms (up to 1 hour) to really help us carry out our desire for strong relationships amongst everyone.

More Opportunities for Parents

If you can’t make it to our Back To School Night on January 31st, feel free to join us at 8am on February 9th for coffee and tea at our Parent Connect meeting.  We also have the evening of February 20th set aside to talk about teenagers and technology.

As previously announced, we are also still looking for any parents interested in serving as a grade level parent liaison, we are keen to begin building such connections!   If you would like to be a communicator for a WhatsApp group, please indicate your interest to Mr. Frederick Francois at frederick.francois@lighthouse.edu.mu or let us know at the Back to School Night on January 31.

No School next Thursday and Friday

Weather closures have impacted our ability for routine, but last September we set the 2024 school year calendar to make sure we would have 182 days of learning.  You will notice that there are a few occasions where we’ve made the Friday after a public holiday a “no school day.”

Please take note then that just as this week, there are no classes scheduled for next Thursday and Friday (1st and 2nd Feb).
