Message from the Co-Interim Principal

Joining this school community is far more than simply taking on a new role; it is a genuine privilege.

As I prepare to begin this new chapter, both in a new school and a new country, I do so with great anticipation, gratitude, and a deep sense of responsibility. I am excited to get to know the children, families, and staff, and to become part of a community that is committed to nurturing young people academically, personally, and spiritually.

The week before the mid-term break was a busy one. The Sports Day was a wonderful occasion which demonstrated the children's enthusiasm, perseverance, and sporting achievements. It was a joy to see the deep affection and fond tributes given to Mr West as part of his farewell. As you will see in the photos below, the classes celebrated him in such varied and wonderful ways with songs and skits. The guard of honour was particularly moving as the children and staff lined up to bid him farewell.

I look forward to building on the strong foundations that Mr West has already established and working alongside you to ensure that our school continues to flourish. Together, we will continue to strive for excellence in teaching and learning and an environment where every child is truly valued and encouraged to reach their full potential.

By God's grace, I am confident that the year ahead will be one of growth, opportunity, and discovery. My hope is that our school will continue to be a place where students are inspired to develop strong character, deepen their faith, and grow into compassionate and confident young people who make a positive difference in the world.

Primary Events

Fun Run and Market Day: Postponed

We remind you that our Fun Run and Market Day scheduled for Saturday, 4 July, has been postponed.

The event will still take place later in the year, most likely in Term 3 and you will be informed of the new date as soon as possible.

Fun Run registrations and payment: If you have enrolled in the Fun Run, please note that your payment is still valid and that it will hold your place for the new date. You can still sign-up to the race here.

Market vendors: if you have registered as a vendor for the Market Day, kindly check the email that Ms Julie has sent you.

Volunteers: We encourage parents and members of the community to join us and volunteer to help at the event. Preparing this event together will make it even more memorable and is a great way to be involved in the school community. If you want to help, please register here.

Such events are an important part of our school calendar and are a wonderful way to bring the community together.

Primary News

Darnelle Pretorius’ Visit

Dr Darnelle Pretorious, who once served as the Principal at Lighthouse, and who has ably served as Board Member since her departure, will be visiting our school from Monday, 29 June, to Friday, 3 July. Dr Pretorious, after nearly 8 years of service, will be retiring from the Lighthouse Board next month, in order to take on more responsibilities in another role in Australia.

We are immensely grateful for her guidance and service on the Lighthouse Board for all these years. For those who remember her, please do stop by to say hello and farewell and for her many contributions to our school community.

3P Learning Logins

3P Learning logins have been sent to all new parents who registered for the programme between June and December.

Sports and Clubs Rotation

As previously announced Sports and Clubs are now on a 6-week rotation system. Please see below the schedule for the next 6 weeks:

UPPER PRIMARY

CAR 5 Report, 3 July

Our 4 weeks CAR reports will be out this Friday by the end of the day. Please check your child’s progress on Ed-Admin.

MAP Testing, 6-16 July

As we approach our upcoming MAP assessments, we kindly ask for your support in ensuring that your child is well prepared. It is very important that children are present on these testing days, as the assessments play a key role in helping us understand their progress and next steps in learning.

Please ensure your child is well rested and has had a good breakfast so they can concentrate fully during the morning sessions.

For parents of Grade 1 and Grade 2 students, we would appreciate it if children could bring their own headphones for the tests. These should be plug-in headphones (no Bluetooth). While the school does have a supply available, having their own helps ensure a smoother experience for all.

Uniform Shop Updates: New Winter Jackets Available Online

We are happy to inform you that our new winter uniforms are now available for purchase on the Unform Shop (Shop Online > Winter Wear).

For the jackets, you can now buy both the usual dry-fit one and the new cotton one. Dry-fit ones' sizes can be checked on the website.

Please be reminded that the only accepted payment methods are cards and MCB's Juice. No cash payment will be accepted. For any inquiries, please contact Ms Melanie at uniform@lighthouse.edu.mu.

Music Day Assembly

What a great time we had on Music Day! This vibrant assembly was an amazing time for our students to showcase their talents and their love for music through dances, songs, and instrument playing. Thank you to our wonderful teachers and to Mr Kevin for organising a yet again wonderful educational and fun time!

Music Outing: A Day of Discovery Through Music

On the 12 June, a group of our Grade 3 and Grade 6 students enjoyed an inspiring educational visit to the Conservatory's Instrument Museum, where history, culture, and music came together in an unforgettable learning experience.

Students explored an extraordinary collection of instruments spanning European, British, French, Chinese, Indian, and Mauritian musical traditions. They discovered centuries-old instruments preserved in the museum, learned about locally crafted instruments by one of Mauritius' renowned luthiers, and deepened their understanding of the string, wind, brass, and percussion families—topics they have been exploring through their guitar and ukulele studies.

The highlight of the day was a live afternoon concert, where students experienced these instruments in performance. From the rich sound of the grand piano and double bass to the vibrant colours of the percussion family—including the timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, snare drum, gong, maracas, and traditional shakers—they witnessed music come alive while learning about the origins and cultural stories behind many of the instruments.

The excitement was unmistakable. As the concert ended, many students eagerly gathered around the performers, asking questions and expressing their admiration. Moments like these remind us that meaningful learning often begins with exposure. By opening doors to new musical experiences, cultures, and possibilities, we plant seeds of curiosity and inspiration that may one day grow into lifelong passions.

Because there is power in exposure—and sometimes, one inspiring moment can change the course of a life.

What's Happening in Secondary?

International Food Fair: Another Success!

The third edition of the Lighthouse International Food Fair was a tremendous success! It was a wonderful and flavourful opportunity for our school community to come together and celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes Lighthouse so unique. Students, staff, and families enjoyed a variety of delicious dishes from around the world while learning about different traditions and customs. The event was filled with laughter, music, vibrant displays, and a true spirit of unity. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed their time, effort, and culinary talents to make this memorable event possible. We are already looking forward to next year's edition!

Parents' Prayer Meeting: Every Friday

As every week, parents are welcome on Friday for our prayer meetings. Join us from 08:00 to 08:30 at the Hub (upstairs balcony). We look forward to seeing you there!

Traffic Flow: Morning, Afternoon and Wednesday Pickup

Wednesday Only Afternoon Pickup

Reception and Grade 1 Pickup

Parents should enter the gate in the right lane. You should enter the lay-by and pull forward as far as possible for your child to enter your car. Once your child is secured in your vehicle, follow the lay-by and exit the far end to rejoin the right lane of primary traffic. Move to the left lane, turning right, and carefully pass the Grade 2 and 3 loading zone and merge to proceed past the Pavilion to exit at the lower gate.
If your family has siblings in Grade 2 or 3, they will still be picked up with your reception or Grade 1 child.
Grade R parents, as communicated, please drop and go. Only park if you have a meeting with a teacher or if you need to drop off something with a teacher.

Grade 2-3 Pickup

Parents should enter the gate in the right lane. Instead of entering the lay-by, proceed to the roundabout turning right and remaining in the right lane. A new ‘Wednesday only’ loading zone will be located at the end of the Hub parking lot. Once your child is secure, merge into the traffic to proceed past the Pavilion to exit at the lower gate.

Grade 4-6 Pickup

Parents should enter the gate in the left lane. At the roundabout, stay left and proceed behind the secondary to your usual pickup point at the lay-by on the right near the Farm Lab/lower gate and pull forward as far as possible. Once your child is secure in the car, remain in the lay-by and follow vehicles in the lay-by to exit the far end and rejoin the general flow of traffic, and exit campus.

Dates and times:

Pick-up at the Hub (for online purchases only): Monday to Friday (08:00 - 15:30 - upon email notification that your order is ready for collection).
Uniform Shop in the Pavilion building (first floor): Monday (08:00 - 12:00), Wednesday (08:00 - 13:30), Friday (08:00 - 12:00).

Please make sure to bring your reservation number in order to collect your purchase at the Hub.

Attendance: Notice of Early Departure

If your child needs to leave campus before the usual dismissal time at short notice and for a valid reason, please call the Hub or send an email to attendance@lighthouse.edu.mu before 13:30 so we can inform your child's teacher. After 14:00, students and teachers may be in different areas (especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays when we run Sports & Clubs), and messages may not reach them in time. To avoid any confusion, please ensure all transport and arrangements are clearly communicated.

In case of early departure, the parent or responsible party must sign the student out at the Hub.

Health Reminders

If something has changed for your child health wise, please keep us up to date by submitting a new Student Health Form. Otherwise, we will assume all permissions and medical information remain unchanged.

No medications may be kept in student bags! If your child needs to take medication while at school, please fill out this Medication Authorization form and drop the form and medication at the HUB.

First Aid notifications to parents: We do not phone parents for minor first aid incidents at school. You will receive a call or note in the following circumstances:
- A call if your child is sick needs to be sent home
- A call if your child is injured and may require further medical attention.

Fever-Free Policy

Any child who develops a fever should remain at home until they are fever-free for 24hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (such as Paracetamol or Motrin/Ibuprofen).

Why is this necessary? Fever-reducing medication (such as panadol or burofen) can mask symptoms, making a child appear well when they may still be contagious or prone to a relapse.
What defines a fever? For the purposes of this policy, a fever is considered a temperature 37.8°C or higher.

When to Keep Your Child Home:

In addition to the Fever-Free Policy, please consider keeping your child home if they exhibit:

Vomiting or diarrhea( 2+ times) within the last 24 hours.
Too weak or unwell to participate in the school activities.

We understand that keeping a child home can be a challenge for working schedules, but your cooperation is essential in preventing larger outbreaks in the classroom.
