Dear Lighthouse Primary School Families,
I trust this letter finds you well and that the first three days of the new academic year have been both exciting and smooth for your children. It is with great joy and gratitude that I extend a warm welcome back to each of our families.
I am pleased to share that our Reception and Grade 1 children have settled into their new classes remarkably well. Their enthusiasm and curiosity have filled our classrooms with positive energy, and it's heartening to witness their eagerness to embrace learning and make new friends.
Undoubtedly, the past weeks have presented challenges for our school and community due to the impact of Cyclone Belal. In light of this, we stand united as a school to support various groups involved in collections and assistance for families most affected. Your generosity and kindness will undoubtedly make a significant difference, and we appreciate your willingness to come together during challenging times. Click here to see how you can get involved.
I am delighted to introduce some new faces within our Lighthouse Primary School family. Join me in welcoming Ms. Tanya Lombard in Grade 4, Ms. Cyntia Boodhai in Grade 1, Ms. Emily Sauzier in Reception, and the return of Ms. Beronica Mussafeer from England to Grade 2.
Ms. Ansy Jaunky and Lea Mayen join as class assistants in Reception, while Ms. Tershiah Williams (starting at the end of January) takes on the role of Grade 3 Learner Assistant. A special welcome to Ms. Shannon Wakefield, who will be serving as the educational psychologist at the Learner Support Centre.
I want to express my gratitude to our entire staff for their commitment to welcoming the children back to school with open arms. To our parents, thank you for entrusting your children to our care. Your partnership is invaluable, and we look forward to a successful academic year together.
As we step into the new year and celebrate our 15th anniversary as a school, may we experience a year filled with growth, learning, new opportunities, triumphs and memorable moments.
Here's to a wonderful academic year at Lighthouse Primary School!
Feel free to contact me on or Ms. Flo via email, should you have any questions or concerns.
Early release on the first day of school.
I would like to share some context about why we start a term with a shortened day for our students after a holiday. Starting the term with a shorter day serves a dual purpose at Lighthouse. Firstly, it acknowledges the significant emotional weight the first day holds for many students, helping them ease into the routine, especially if they're dealing with anxiety or parental separation concerns. We've also experienced that high levels of adrenaline lead to fatigue and other socio-emotional struggles in the later part of the day.
Secondly, it minimizes traffic congestion during the initial pick-up, providing a smooth reminder of reuniting procedures. This approach aligns with our commitment to ensuring a positive and gradual transition for all students.
Please always feel free to contact us if this poses any concerns. We're here to assist and find solutions together.
Calendar for 2024

You will notice that there are a few occasions where we've made the Friday after a public holiday a 'no school' day. The leadership team recognised through attendance data, that many families used the Fridays following a holiday, for extended weekends. This year has an unusual number of public holidays on Thursdays, so this will not be an everyday occurrence. We were able to do this without impacting the length of the academic year.
Take note then that there are no classes scheduled for this Thursday and Friday.
CPL Needed!
Our CPLs (Class-parent liaisons) play an essential role in building our Lighthouse community and being the spokesperson for the class. Having a CPL has helped parents greatly in communicating with the teachers or the school for urgent matters. It does require some commitment but we are here to support as well when needed. This role is open to anyone and we would encourage every one of you to consider volunteering to be your Class's CPL this year! If you would like to be a CPL, please let your respective child's teacher know.
If you would like more details about the role and what it entails, Irma Laas (last year's CPL) would be happy to tell you more. Please email her at lrma@laas.tv with your questions.
Uniform Shop
Due to the upcoming public holiday on Thursday, the shop will be open on Wednesday 24th January from 08:00- 15:00, next to Classroom 10.
House T-shirts
Please note that we are now selling the house T-shirts at the Uniform shop. House T-shirts are to be worn ONLY on Mondays.
Please note, however, that due to a colour discrepancy for the AMARE house, we will not be able to sell any AMARE t-shirts at the moment. If you have purchased an AMARE t-shirt this year already, please return the T-shirt to Miss Rachel at the hub reception. We will give you the correct Amare T-shirts once we receive the new stock.

We would like to reiterate that our newsletter will be the main distribution point for whole Primary School communication and encourage you to prioritise reading our newsletters.
