Following a period across the periodic table highlights the trend from metallic to non-metallic properties. The first and the last periods of the table are incomplete, while the other five periods of elements start with a reactive alkali metal and finish with an unreactive, non-metallic, noble gas.
The transition elements are the block of elements in the center of the table and they are the most useful metallic elements available to us.
They are hard and strong, but much less reactive than metals in Groups I and II. Transition elements have also a high density and melting point and they are excellent corrosion resistant.
They have also two distinctive properties:
Many of their compounds are colored
they often show more than one valency
They form more than one type of ion
