This educational site will be a repository of the creative process and all the digital materials produced by the students in groups at the end of this Civic Education module on gender issues and, in particular, (mis)representations of powerful women from history and myth. When we studied the Celts, and their troubled relationship with the Romans, Queen Boudica's role seemed worth exploring. Boudica's story has inspired numerous artistic representations, including sculptures, paintings, plays, films, docu-films and literary works. Her tale continues to captivate people, highlighting her role as a symbol of female empowerment and defiance against oppression.
Each page of the website focusses on the work of a group on an aspect of the main topic, showing students' creativity and their process work in discovering the character of Queen Boudica through articles, documentaries, films and plays and in dramatising her story with apps e webtools that they have learnt to use.
The wider framework for the project on Queen Boudica is the UN Agenda 2030 and, in particular, SDG 5, which tackles Gender Equality.
Some of the topics the students decided to explore are: who Queen Boudica was, how was her relationship to motherhood, to patriarchy and misogyny within Roman culture, her legacy as a feminist icon, her influence as a country leader, her relevance today.
is what you should do!
Don't be afraid of digital tools: let's explore together apps and web tools that can be useful in our classwork, either in the 3.0 lab or in any other classroom!
They are beautiful to watch, challenging to make, suitable for any school subject!
An example of authentic task which builds on your competences of analysis and synthesis, fuelling your creativity.
You can create posters, flyers, brochures, flashcards... but also compelling presentations and videos.
Canva is one of the web tools students can use for their initial stages of their research on Queen Boudica and the related topics.
Google earth, thinglink, audacity, voice recorder, cospaces, bookcreator , QR Monkey and others can also be used!
Don't be overambitious, what matters the most is your work on the topic, and the efforts you put into it!
Only when you have developed in-depth thought about your subject-matter, then you can start thinking about the best way to present that idea digitally to the rest of the class.
Your presentational skills along with your oracy skills are also important!
Some students have decided to create a podcast in which Queen Boudica is being interviewed. After completing the podcast, the latter can be transformed into a QR code with a pertinent logo and so the podcast or any other digital product can be accessed. The QR code can also become a sticker to put on a student course book and thus be part of their learning tools! The QR code at the side is a trial recording of information about Queen Boudica, just to give you an idea of the pedagogical potential of QR codes.
