Chino Mandarín

(MANDARIAN CHINESE)

The Spanish word "mandarin" (from Portuguese mandarim, from Malay menteri, from Sanskrit mantrī, mantrin, meaning 'minister or adviser') originally designated an official of the Ming and Qing empires. As their native varieties were often mutually unintelligible, these officials communicated using a Koine language based on various northern varieties. When Jesuit missionaries learned this standard language in the 16th century, they called it "Mandarin", after its Chinese name Guānhuà (官话/官話) or 'officials' language'.

Mandarin is the language with the most native speakers in the world. The emergence of China as the second international economic power opens the need to know this new market by learning its language and culture. This workshop is delivered by Oxford Education.
