"The most successful cultures are the ones that combine connection and safety in a potent mixture that allows each member to feel as if they are part of something greater than themselves." ― Daniel Coyle, The Culture Code
“To the Greeks, the word "character" first referred to the stamp upon a coin. By extension, man was the coin, and the character trait was the stamp imprinted upon him. To them, that trait, for example bravery, was a share of something all mankind had, rather than means of distinguishing one from the whole.” ― Edith Hamilton, The Greek Way

Update 1
10.5.24
First, diving deeper into our study of Ancient Greece, we explored the landscape of historical events, zooming out to grasp the broader context before zooming in on 11 key moments of ancient Greek civilization. This journey through time, from the distant past to the future celebration of LWS' 5th Birthday, helped us comprehend the rich tapestry of history. We carefully painted these moments on out logs to use throughout our project as an active timeline.
Next, immersing ourselves in the daily lives of Ancient Greeks, we delved into aspects like clothing, fashion, leisure, entertainment, food, drink, and family dynamics. Drawing inspiration from the significance of ancient Greek pottery as a window into the past, we embarked on a creative endeavour, crafting replica vases with papier Mache, aiming to honour the craftsmanship of ancient artisans.
Then, as a collective effort, we meticulously depicted scenes of daily life, exploring the nuances between black-figure and red-figure painting techniques. Through lively discussions, we pondered the evolution of these styles over time, deepening our curiosity for the ancient world and enhancing our appreciation for its wonders.
Update #2
7.6.24
First, in preparation for our party and workshop, we explored the rich tapestry of Greek clothing. We learned about different types of clothing such as chitons, himations, and peplos. Drawing inspiration from these ancient garments, we created our own versions, experiencing first hand the styles of the past.
Next, we participated in an engaging Ancient Greek workshop run by Lauren from Portals to the Past. Through this workshop, we learned about Greek life and culture, including the famous Battles of Thermopylae and Marathon. We also took part in an exciting quiz covering topics like Greek Gods, City States, The Olympic Games, Alexander the Great, Greek World, Philosophers, Mythical Creatures, and Heroes.
Then, our focus shifted to Greek weapons and armour, and we explored the differences between the city-states of Athens and Sparta. We learned about Athenian democracy and held a mock lesson in democratic practices. Depending on whether Athens or Sparta won, we either prepared for our own mini Olympic Games or joined the Spartan Agoge to train as warriors. We concluded the day by re-enacting the great Battle of Gaugamela between Alexander the Great and King Darius.
The story of Pandora's Box fascinated us so much that we have decided to create our own boxes. We spent time crafting different figures to represent the contents of Pandora's Box using Fimo clay. We carefully moulded our own interpretation of the evils and hope that escaped from the box, bringing the myth to life with their unique creations. We also started to make our own Petteia game, a Greek strategy game played by Alexander the Great, to play at our celebration, along with trying out Archimedes Stomachion, a Greek jigsaw puzzle designed to exercise the mind.
Update #3
28.6.24
First, we embarked on an intriguing exploration comparing ancient and modern games, specifically focusing on the ancient Greek board game Petteia. By examining current board games, we noticed fascinating similarities and differences in game strategies and objectives, deepening our understanding of historical leisure activities and their evolution.
Next, we delved into the world of ancient Greek celebrations, researching their traditions, food, clothing, locations, and reasons for festivities. This enriched understanding inspired us to start constructing our own Parthenon model out of cardboard, complete with a detailed frieze, as a centrepiece for our upcoming fifth birthday celebration of LWS. Our hands were busy crafting, cutting, and assembling, bringing an ancient architectural marvel to life with authenticity reflecting our studies.
Then, in the shade of the cool yew tree, we worked diligently on finalising all aspects of our project. We wrote detailed invitations, creatively informing others in our home about what to expect at the birthday celebration, which will showcase our Greek projects and games. Our determination and independence shone through as we took responsibility for bringing our learning journey to an impressive conclusion, ready for the exhibition.
We are thrilled about the upcoming celebration and exhibition, where we'll share all we've learned and created about Ancient Greece. Our journey through history has not only taught us about the past but also brought us together in a collaborative and creative spirit.
Party at the Parthenon
5.7.24
Thank you to all parents and families who joined us at our grand celebration amidst the cardboard Parthenon, where we embarked on a journey through Ancient Greece. The aroma of Greek delicacies filled the air, with everyone delighting in the unique dessert of olives dipped in honey, a sweet taste of history.
Next, we immersed ourselves in the strategic depths of Petteia, an ancient Greek board game that brought together families in friendly competition. The echoes of laughter and cheers resonated under the shadow of the Parthenon as we strategised and celebrated the spirit of ancient leisure.
Then, we delved into the mythical realm once more, reciting the tale of Pandora's Box through our crafted symbols. Each creation, meticulously formed from Fimo clay, breathed life into the story of hope and curiosity, weaving together our studies with creativity and imagination.
We are grateful for your presence, which made our celebration truly spectacular. Your enthusiasm and support have enriched our journey through Ancient Greece, turning learning into a collaborative adventure. Thank you for being a part of this memorable experience and for sharing in our passion for history and culture.
