What makes a sporting athlete ‘great’, and which historical events or achievements helped them become famous?
The Ducks will begin to think like historians by asking big questions about the past. They will investigate famous athletes and the events they competed in, such as the Olympic Games, Wimbledon Championships and Tour de France, and understand that these events have changed over time.
This is the project poster we jointly created on Canva, what do you think? We tried to include various elements that capture this term's project and learning
We are using the 'Little People, Big Dreams' series to support our learning around some of the world's most famous athletes.
This term's cross-curricular project will develop the children's skills in the following curriculum areas:
ROOTS: Skills of Enquiry and Communication, Knowledge and understanding in becoming informed Citizens
TRUNK: Communication and Language, Questioning, Investigating, Drawing Conclusions, Presenting, Media
CROWN: Creative Arts & Design, Techniques and Materials, Designs, Research, Events, People and Places, Reasons for Events, Changes in Society, Representation of Sources
Ask: What do we already know about sport?
Explore: Who were famous athletes in the past?
Investigate: What events did they take part in?
Compare: What has changed in sport over time?
Conclude: Which athlete was the greatest and why?
Update 1 - 08.05.2026
We began by researching seven different sports that we chose democratically.
We are working in teams to research and better understand football, cycling, swimming, athletics, tennis, and gymnastics. We will also try to identify and rank the greatest athletes and sporting events in these sports.
Historical sporting moment!

Questions to discuss at home
What sport are you researching in a group at school?
Do you know any famous athletes?
Can you name a historic sporting event or occasion?
All England Tennis Club - Wimbledon
Today, the Ducks had a truly wonderful visit to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, home of the world-famous The Championships, Wimbledon. Throughout the day, we explored the history of how the club and tournament first began and learned how Wimbledon has grown into one of the most celebrated sporting events in the world.
During our workshop, we focused on the importance of healthy eating and balanced diets, learning how athletes fuel their bodies to stay strong, energised and ready to compete. The Ducks shared some fantastic ideas and demonstrated a brilliant understanding of how food helps us exercise, grow and recover.
We were also lucky enough to enjoy a tour of the beautiful grounds, including a very exciting visit to Centre Court, which was a real highlight of the day.
The Ducks represented Liberty Woodland School exceptionally well throughout the trip. At the end of the day, the Wimbledon staff commented on the children’s fantastic behaviour, enthusiasm and manners, which had also been noticed by other members of staff around the grounds. We were incredibly proud of the Ducks and the way they conducted themselves during such a special experience.
Centre Court!
We were very lucky to enjoy a special tennis coaching session with Michal, Katarina’s husband, who is a tennis coach. The Ducks had a fantastic time learning more about tennis, including key skills and techniques used by players.
Throughout the session, the children practised their racket and ball skills, worked on their coordination and had lots of opportunities to play fun tennis games. The Ducks showed great enthusiasm, listened carefully and gave everything a go.
A huge thank you to Michal for sharing his expertise and helping us develop our tennis skills. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session, and it was a wonderful way to build on our learning about the history of sport and our recent visit to Wimbledon.
A very special goodluck message Tao Geoghegan Hart, 2020 Giro di'Italia
This half-term, the Ducks are taking on an exciting and ambitious challenge: cycling 1,500km from Liberty Woodland School to Barcelona, the starting location of the 2026 Tour de France.
Using a children's bike mounted on a turbo trainer, a set of rollers and an adult stationary bike, the class will work together to cover the distance over the course of a week. Every child will have the opportunity to take part, contributing their own kilometres towards our shared goal. Families are also invited to join the challenge by adding any cycling distances they complete at home, helping Team Duck travel even further.
While the challenge is inspired by one of the world's greatest and historical sporting events, it is about much more than simply riding a bike. Along the way, the Ducks will learn about the history of cycling and the Tour de France, calculate distances and totals, and discover famous landmarks and places as we journey through England, France and Spain.
The challenge will also test many important life skills. The children will need to demonstrate perseverance, resilience, teamwork and determination as they work towards a goal that would be impossible to achieve alone. Some moments will feel easy, whilst others may feel challenging, but by supporting one another, celebrating every contribution and taking small steps towards a much bigger goal, the Ducks will experience first-hand what can be achieved when a community works together.
Tour de Duck is a physical challenge, a mental challenge and a learning adventure rolled into one. Most importantly, it is an opportunity for the children to create lasting memories, develop confidence in themselves and discover that even some of the biggest journeys begin with a single pedal stroke.
Our Tour de Duck daily summaries are below. Each day, we travelled further and further towards the finish line in Barcelona. It has been truly magical to see the Ducks rally together around such an enormous physical and mental challenge - they have managed to keep their bike moving non-stop from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm each day!
