In order to be considered for membership, the student must be a second-semester seventh-grader and must have completed one full semester at Santa Rita Middle School. The student must possess an overall cumulative grade point average of 92 for at the end of the 4th six weeks of the current year. All core classes are used to determine this average.
During the second semester, a list of students will be compiled that have met the scholastic requirement of a 92 average (averaged across all core classes) through the 4th six weeks. Students will be notified of their eligibility and provided with an application for membership. The student must complete all parts of the application and submit it by the deadline stated on the form. Once the form has been completed, signed, and submitted, it becomes the property of the National Junior Honor Society. A signed form authorizes the National Junior Honor Society to compile teacher evaluations and conduct records and activity verifications. No forms will be accepted after the deadline. It is very important to follow the instructions for the application process from beginning to end. Leadership will be based on participation in clubs and organizations at school and in the community, as well as teacher-documented leadership in the classroom. Service will be based on participation in school, community, and/or outside groups. Documented service projects also are considered.
A faculty committee appointed by the principal will select from all the qualifying applicants - those who excel in scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. The basis for the selection is the student application and information provided by the faculty and administration. The principal will review and approve the list of inductees. Students will be notified of their membership status by the NJHS advisor through their school email account. Students will then need to accept their invitation and acknowledge the chapter bylaws through a Google Form that will be sent to them.
Membership is more than an honor. It is an ongoing responsibility and an obligation to continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities that result in a student’s selection. Membership also carries a responsibility to the chapter. If our NJHS chapter is to be effective and meaningful, each member must become involved.
Chapter obligations include:
Regularly attending chapter meetings
Completing service hours - requirements include 5 hours every summer, 8 hours each semester, and involvement in group service projects
$20 membership dues
Abiding by all school rules and behavior expectations
