Coach Desi Smith's Reflection of This Year

When Coach Desi Smith was asked how long she has been a coach, she stated, "I have been a coach for 3 years; 2 years at the middle school, and 1 year at the high school." Coach Smith said that she has been head coach for 1 year. Pendegraft asked Smith how she reacted when they won the district title, she said, " I felt a lot of pride in my players and I felt happiness seeing them achieve the success they worked exceptionally hard for." Smith told Pendegraft that the team, "focused on the little things, added variety to our playbook defensively and offensively, and pulled together as a team taking every opportunity to prepare ourselves to win." Smith assured Pendegraft that she feels, "beyond grateful to have such a great group of girls and so much pride in their dedication and trust in me. I could not ask for a better group to coach my first year. I want to make them the best they can be individually and I hope they know that." When Smith was asked what changes she would make to next year's program, she stated, "We will be losing a lot of key players and a major scorer, so we will have to incorporate our underclassmen more and find more opportunities and confidence in our offensive game while maintaining our defensive principles." Coach explains her expectations for next year,  "I hope to build off the success we have achieved and play with a new fierceness and belief in our team and program. We are more than capable of achieving success again next year if we stay together and fight to continue to improve."

Traction Members Meet the Mayor!

By: Tasha Cherry  Edited By: Selestice Ray

The Traction Team at Liberty High School purchased signs advertising “loose gravel” in order to prevent crashes on dirt roads. The purpose of this project was to prevent teen accidents or crashes. They met with Louis Colaiannia, mayor of Birch Tree, Missouri, Commissioner Herman Kelly of Birch Tree Missouri, John Krasuski, mayor of Mountain View, Missouri, and Eddie Owens, maintenance manager responsible for the signs provided for this project. Both mayors were very supportive of the program. Traction members worked hard raising funds to purchase signs for this project.  Members of the Traction team include Madison Martinez, who stated she enjoyed Traction because she learned a fair amount about driving under the influence (DUI); Jihan Hester, who stated he enjoyed Traction because he met new people; Matthew Moore, who stated he enjoyed Traction because they promoted safety of other people and for learning more about the laws that keep us safe; Kaitlyn Crane, who said she enjoyed Traction for the leadership skills they retained through projects and helping out the community through fundraisers, and Payton Glasscock, who said she enjoyed hanging out with her friends and meeting new people within the community and members of other Traction teams. When the instructor, Patricia Wilhelm, was asked why she started the Traction team, she stated, “I established Traction at the Liberty High School because I feel that it is very important to me. It is a free program that teaches leadership, that driving can be hazardous, and that teenagers must take driving very seriously.” She also stated, “We want teenagers and adults to realize that seatbelts are important and that driving under the influence, or even while tired, can be extremely dangerous.” Mrs. Wilhelm said she is very proud of every member of her Traction Team, and she is thankful for every person who has participated in fundraisers, or even just cheered the team on from the sidelines.
